  About our region

We offer high quality winter chalet holidays in France that are very relaxed, friendly and informal yet professionally run. Enjoy the warmest of French winter welcomes in the unique chalet Le Cret, traditionally built, beautifully furnished and centrally located in the French village of Chatel. Situated in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, the largest linked ski area in France and the world, Chatel is the perfect location for your french skiing and snowboarding winter holidays.

Out and about in Châtel

Châtel boasts many traditional French restaurants, numerous bars many with live music and sun terraces, a wide variety of shops offering all your holiday needs, specialty souvenir shops and of course plenty of well equipped ski and alpine sports shops all within walking distance of the chalet.

For those with a plentiful supply of energy there is a traditional bowling alley in the village, an outdoor ice-skating rink at Lac Vonnes and just over the boarder in Switzerland hot springs to relax aching muscles. At Pre la Joux you can have a go on the bob luge which is open all year round and a great thrill for all.

Winter skiing holidays in Châtel

Châtel is one of the 12 resorts that join to make the Portes du Soleil, the largest linked ski area in the world. You can ski in France in the morning and Switzerland in the afternoon.

Visit all 12 resorts including the picturesque Morzine, the quiet and peaceful Morgins with its breath taking views of the Dents du Midi, Avoriaz which is purpose built to blend in with the mountain side on which it stands or the lesser known Champery and Les Crosets with their quiet, wide open ski runs.

These totally unique resorts link together to form the P.D.S. with over 650kms of piste, 220 lifts, famous snow parks and 100's of fabulous slope side restaurants. To top it all you only use one lift pass and don't even need to take it out of your pocket!

Super Châtel

From Châtel village centre you can travel up to the varied ski area of Super Châtel which is a perfect spot for beginners as there are plenty of gentle nursery slopes. There are also great pistes for more experienced skiers and boarders, complete with a black button lift for very confident skiers and boarders! Super Châtel also has a fantastic board park with plenty of jumps for acrobatic boarders and skiers, a boarder cross track running through the forest and plenty of off piste play grounds for those famous powder days.

The best hosts possible

Kari and Gary, both keen skiers, have skied for over 15 years with 5 seasons collectively spent skiing the Châtel and P.D.S. area.

They are both passionate about their skiing and snowboarding (Gary has gained NZSIA-stage 1 snowboard instructor qualifications) and they want you to enjoy your time spent in the P.D.S. to the full. They will happily accompany guests on days out, to help discover pastures new and show some of the secret spots in the area.

Whether you want to find quiet cruising slopes or the most exhilarating skiing or boarding you can find, Kari and Gary will do their utmost to help!

Keeping in touch

At Alpine Retreat - Châtel we like to keep in touch. We have two way radios and a chalet mobile available for guests to use. Two way radios can be a great way of keeping in touch if you are out in 'split groups' even if just for making a rendezvous for lunch.

Summer Alpine Holidays in Châtel

Ever thought about an alpine summer holiday? During the summer months the Alps are alive with activities to suit every age and taste. Châtel takes on a totally different air in the summer compared with that of the winter. Everywhere you turn there are banks, baskets, window boxes, balcony rails all alive with beautiful floral displays.

There is a relaxed vibe to the town with restaurants offering alfresco dining for lunch and dinner and many of the bars have sun terraces that make a great spot to sit for a while and watch the world go by. Châtel has a large underground multi storey car park that throughout the summer is free of charge.

There are more activities than you could ever wish for, from walking to flying to white water rafting.

Walking

For walkers there are mile after mile of well marked and well kept walking paths. The GR5 is one of the most famous walking paths in France which runs close by the village. Hike up Mont de Grange and stay the night in a refuge enjoying a traditional evening meal and plenty of locally made wine then rise before dawn to see the awesome spectacle of the sun rising over Mont Blanc.

Mountain biking

We are located in prime mountain biking country. With chair lifts to help you go up, the possibilities are endless. Ride the length and breadth of the Portes du Soleil, and visit places unreachable in the winter months when the snow is thick on the ground.

Horse riding

Have a go at horse riding. With stables near by you can relax and enjoy views of the mountains whilst on horseback.

Bird watching

Bring your binoculars and try a spot of bird watching. With many birds of prey in the area including Golden Eagles soaring high above the mountainside.

Golfing

For golfers of all standards there are more courses here than you could ever imagine. From gentle 9 hole pitch and putt courses in Switzerland or stunning Avoriaz to the Royal Evian Masters course. How about the challenging Les Gets, the course that you ski over in the winter! The breath taking views soothes even a bad game.

About our chalet (sleeps 14/15)

Built in 1952 chalet Le Cret has kept its original 1950's interior decoration. Feel like you are staying in the set of an Agatha Christie Alpine Poirôt Mystery. Don't be fooled by the 50's style radiators - very functional pieces of art work - they run off a state of the art heating and water system ensuring the chalet is always nice and warm, with the help of double glazing to keep the winter chill at bay and there's always plenty of hot water.

The comfortable and functional living area is equipped with hot drink making facilities, TV, D.V.D player and HiFi available for all.

The bedrooms are all unique, charming and spacious, some with balconies all with spectacular views.

To the side of the chalet is a secluded sun terrace perfect for tea on a sunny afternoon or a barbecue when the weather permits. Above all, Chalet Le Cret has the best location in town. We are 3 minutes on foot to Chatel centre and only 300 metres to the nearest bar. You can even ski or board to the back door when conditions are good!

Getting there

Flying is the quickest and easiest way to travel to the Alps. EasyJet are still the most popular airline flying to Geneva from the UK with BA, and many others also offering low cost deals.

For those travelling by plane, arrive at Geneva on Saturday between 10am and 4pm and travel to Chatel free courtesy of us. Arrangements can be made for transport at other times. Please call for further information.

By car: Châtel is 500/550 miles from Calais.

Although we are centrally located in Chatel we highly recommend having a car, whether it be hired from Geneva or self drive, for the duration of your stay due to the many activities on hand and places of interest to visit. During the summer months the self-drive option may be more appealing with many more places of interest accessible and open to the public than in the winter months. Make a holiday of your journey by taking time to stop off and discover new places as you travel.
