  About our region

Montriond is situated in the Vallée d'Aulps, the last village in the valley which is 35 km long and stretches out along both sides of the River Dranse, with nine villages en route. The landscape is punctuated by the Dranse, with numerous streams gushing down the steep mountainside. The Dranse was used in the Olympic Games for white water canoeing, and now many watersports are held on it, including white water rafting, hydrospeed and hot-dogging.

For winter holidays, The "Portes du Soleil," or "Gateway to the Sun" is the largest skiing area in the world, with 650 km of pistes, 204 lifts with the highest being 2466 metres, and 279 pistes criss-crossing France and Switzerland. The chalet is well placed as the ski bus stops at the end of the drive and we are only five minutes from the Ardent lift by car or bus, offering easy access to Chatel, Avoriaz and SkiingSwitzerland. The variety of skiing is endless, from "Le Grand Paradis," a scenic and wildlife trip, to the Portes du Soleil Tour which takes in as many of the French and Swiss resorts as possible; a full day out encompassing great skiing and fantastic views! You can have lunch at the top of Rosta, with views towards Mont Blanc.

There are five snowparks, or you can try snowshoeing, or take a dip in Lake Montriand for an ice dive! For more adventure, try parapenting with skis or board, or take to the skies with a parachute and land on the slope on skis. We can also arrange heliskiing, husky sledging and night snowmobiling. There is floodlit nocurnal skiing on the Pleney three nights a week. Other winter activites include ice climbing, ice diving, toboganning, cascade adventure and sleigh rides.

Morzine has much to offer the visitor for summer holidays too. There are numerous well marked walks and bike routes in the region, supported by leaflets to help you plan your day, or to take with you for guidance.

Ten minutes' drive from the chalet is the hamlet of Lindarets, with its wooden chalets, restaurants and gift shops, and its phenomenal goat population. Not to be missed, but beware if you feed the goats! Just a couple of minutes' drive from the chalet in the same direction is Lac Montriond. It is the second largest lake in the Hautes Savoie and an important tourist attraction in the summer. There are restaurants scattered on the shores, and the sunset on warm summer nights have to be seen. For the children there are donkey rides and 4x4 carts. Every year on the second Saturday in August there is a huge firework display set to music. It has to be seen to be believed, the way the mountains light up and the noises echo. Unreal and a great day out. There is also a cross country circuit around the lake, and it is great for fishing and swimming. There is a filtered swimming area with lifeguards by the side of the lake, making it safe for children to play. Canoeing is another attraction, and there is archery on the shores.

With warm summer temperatures and clear blue skies, summer in the Alps opens up a whole new range of sports and activities. We guarantee you won't run out of things to do!

For mountain biking, Morzine boasts 380 km of marked trails, making it some of the best mountain biking terrain in the world, with world championships being held each year. Twenty four lifts are open all summer, and there is also a 100 km long mountain biking/FFC trail: The Tour des Portes du Soleil: bike hire is available from €15 per half day and €25 for a full day. There is also a permanent, 3250m long descent trail from the top of the Pleney which offers fun and calls for technical skill.

Other sports in summer include bungy jumping, mountainboard grass surfing, paragliding, golf, fishing, horse driven sleigh rides, hill walking, climbing, rambling, canyoning, cascade adventure through tree tops, horse riding, ice skating, tennis, canoeing and kayaking. You can try the luge, summer sledging, mini golf, the water park with three pools, water slide, ping pong, beach volley ball and much more. Some sports can be arranged before you arrive.

Morzine has lots to offer its visitors both in summer and winter. It is a lively traditional market town in the heart of the Portes du Soleil. Every Wednesday morning sees the car park at La Poste closed and a market on the site with lots of local produce, cheese, meats, plants etc.

Within and outside the locality there are plenty of places to visit, including Annecy with its beautiful lake and good shopping, and Geneva, the old beautiful town with cobbled streets and lots of art galleries. Evian, the spa town on the shores of Lake Geneva has a casino. There are water sports on Lake Geneva, where you can water ski, wakeboard, sail, windsurf, or just take a refeshing dip!

Why not take a thiry minute boat trip across the lake to Lausanne, not forgetting your passport as you are in Switzerland now! Yvoire is a splendid medieval city, also on the lake. At Chamonix, just an hour away, you can take a ride up the Aigille du Midi lift, the highest in the world at 3842m. What better way to view the white peak of Mont Blanc? Take the train up to Le Mar du Glace glacier and see the ice carvings. Les Gets is just ten minutes away, and has a mechanical music museum.

The area is superb for landscape painting holidays and photography.

So, if you're looking for adventure and somewhere friendly to stay - look no further than Chalet Koala and Morzine and have it all! We promise you'll want to come back again next year!
