Click here to email owner   About our region

Welcome to Fraysse Haut, an old farmstead set in 6 hectares of fields and woodland in the pleasant rolling countryside above the Lot river valley. The owners, Sheila and Dan, live separately in the main house and speak fluent French and English. We are here to help you when necessary and ensure you make the most of your stay in this delightful region.

Shops, supermarkets and weekly markets are at Puy-l'Evêque (5 kms) and Prayssac (8 kms).

Recreational activities in the vicinity include cycling, tennis, horse riding, swimming pools and lakes, canoeing, river trips, wine tasting. Walking, bird watching and wild flowers are on the doorstep.

The Lot has varied scenery and unspoilt countryside, with many charming villages and hidden treasures. Let us show you where to find frescoed churches, springs and washing stones, dinosaur footprints, small museums and local craftsmen. Cahors, (35 kms) with the Pont Valentre and old quarters, is the nearest main town. Among our recommended places to visit are the châteaux of Biron and Bonaguil, imposing hilltop castles; Monflanquin, Monpazier and other bastides with arcaded squares, and Les Arques ("From here you can't see Paris") and the Zadkine museum.

At Fraysse Haut there are attractions all year round - come in May or June for orchids and meadow flowers, and bird watching at nesting time; July and August for summer events and village fairs, balmy evenings and stunning night skies. Evening markets provide regional fare in the lively ambiance of charming villages. September is the time for fresh figs, followed by walnuts, chestnuts and the grape harvest. Enjoy fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables from village markets, and from our garden when available.

About our properties

Three individual guest units sleep from 2 to 4 people each. If booked together they can comfortably provide capacity for 8 to10. Extra beds are available for even larger groups. The buildings are all self-contained and surround a courtyard with barbecue and seating areas.

The property is reached by a long rural track off a quiet department road and you may wander in the woods and fields and enjoy walks in the surrounding area.

Our aim is to provide a convivial ambiance for independent guests, as well as great possibilities for family or friends to holiday together. In July 2003 we hosted a family reunion to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary, bringing together four families and three generations for a unique and memorable occasion. Or if you prefer to have the place to yourselves, just check availability with us - we are only an email or telephone call away.

The Barn (Sleeps 2 to 4, or 6 combined with the Tower) The Barn

A light and bright barn conversion combining character and comfort, featuring a spacious two storey height living area, overlooked by a gallery. The Barn has been lived in by the owners so there are plenty of shelves (well stocked with holiday reading) and storage space. There is under-floor heating and an enclosed wood burning fire for out-of-season or longer lets.

The living area has large glazed doors which open onto the courtyard. At a slightly lower level is the kitchen and dining area with a solid pine farmhouse table. The fitted kitchen is equipped with fridge/freezer, dishwasher, gas hob and electric oven. There is a cloakroom/utility room with washing machine and a downstairs toilet with shower. Upstairs on the first floor gallery is a double bed and a built-in curtained wardrobe with shelves and hanging space. Off the gallery are a bedroom with twin single beds and a separate bathroom with shower cubicle, basin, toilet and bidet. The Barn has a television receiving Sky free-view satellite and French terrestrial channels; video or DVD equipment is available.

The Tower (Sleeps 2)

The Tower, (le Pigeonnier), is a separate apartment available as an annex to the Barn. Accommodation is on two levels with a panoramic view from the top floor. A south-facing front aspect, lots of windows, white walls and Provençal-print curtains combine to give a bright, airy feeling to this simple but attractive building.

On the first floor, a breakfast/living room is equipped with fridge, microwave, double sink unit, and is furnished with table and chairs and a convertible sofa. A solid wooden staircase leads to the second floor bedroom with twin single beds and four windows overlooking fields and trees; great for spotting wildlife or star-gazing. The compact shower room is freshly tiled and has a screened cubicle shower, a toilet and basin.

The Breadhouse (Sleeps 2 to 3) The Breadhouse

This was the farm bakery, (le Fournil), now converted into a small studio (30m²) for summer accommodation with terracotta-colour floor tiles, pine-boarded ceiling and stone walls. The building is cool and shady, ideal for the summer heat wave, and all necessary facilities are on the one level off the courtyard.

Within the open-plan living/sleeping area is a farmhouse table, chairs, double bed and a dressing area with shelves and hanging space. The tiled shower room has shower cubicle, toilet, bidet and basin. The corner kitchenette has fitted cupboards and worktop with gas hob, inset sink and under-counter fridge. An open-tread wooden staircase goes up to a mezzanine in the roof with additional storage space and a single bed. A small covered terrace to the front of the building provides a pleasant area for meals or just sitting.

Walking Holidays Delightful walks from our doorstep

Fraysse Haut is ideal for walkers as it is situated along the GR652, one of the long distance paths criss-crossing France. A network of other footpaths and tracks provide a variety of country walks and scenery. There are many enthusiastic walking groups active in the area; a good chance to practise some French with the locals. Introductions and drop-offs at meeting points can be arranged.

We can organise tailor-made holidays for groups, and extra beds are available. We are experienced in the organisation of such activity holidays, having worked as leader and guide for Ramblers Holidays.

The all-inclusive walking holiday costs £320 or 480 euros per person and includes:

- 7 nights accommodation in one of the guest units described above

- Continental breakfast

- Packed lunch

- 4-course evening meals with wine, French farmhouse cooking (vegetarian possible)

- Maps and local information pack

- A programme of suggested walks, which can be varied according to weather, fitness, etc.

- Pick-up or drop-off for walks as required.

Available all year round but particularly recommended in May and June for wild flowers, orchids and bird watching. Group rates are negotiable.
