  About our region

St Tropez is often known as 'the Jewel of the Riviera.' What was once a small fishing village has now become a centre for holidaymakers, artists and all those who love the sun and the sea. The town has excellent boutiques for shopping, the citadel to visit and a wide range of restaurants and bars.

The fortified village of Gassin is at an altitude of 220m, its houses stacked behind the 12th century ramparts. From here, the unique panorama of the Gulf of St Tropez can be seen, and there are numerous walks over the hills and forests of pine around the village.

The nearby town of Cogolin is built at the base of a hill and dominated by its old clock tower. It is famous for its briar pipes and hand-made woven rugs, and for its cork products and reeds for musical instruments which go all over the world.

The pretty town of Port Grimaud, known as the 'Venice of Provence' is delightful with its network of canals and bridges. Here you will find an array of small shops, restaurants and cafés, boutiques and beaches.

Inland, the town of Plan de la Tour is a small village surrounded by hills and vineyards, and La Garde Freinet, a village situated at 400m altitude in the Maures Mountains, is accessed by a road through forests of chestnut, pine and oak trees. It is graced by shaded squares, and traditional Provençal shops selling pottery, leather and wood products.

At Collobrières in the heart of the Maures Mountains, one can visit the marrons glacé (candied chestnut) factory, and travel on outside the village towards the Babaou pass with its pretty rest and picnic spots.

Wine growing is one of the main industries in the region, which produces both reds and fine rosé wines.

Further afield are the famous towns and beaches of Ste-Maxime, St Raphael, and on to Cannes and Nice.

This region of the Côte d'Azur offers a whole host of attractions, historical and cultural sites and some of the most beautiful scenery in France.
