  About our gites

An architect-designed conversion, recently completed to a high standard, these former farm buildings comprise three generously proportioned gites with swimming pool, in a rural parkland setting. Standing in the grounds of an early nineteenth century Charentaise  farmhouse, the pretty stone buildings bordering the courtyard were formerly a cottage with adjoining stables and hayloft.

All sympathetically converted, retaining much of their character and charm to create three spacious comfortable gites with many original features.

The gites are two, three and four-bedroomed, with the construction of a new bedroom cleverly incorporated to give additional flexibility.

Each gite has been thoughtfully planned to accommodate disabled guests. Each has its own garden area with barbecue table and chairs plus a patio overlooking the courtyard. Exposed stone walls and impressive oak beams are a feature in each of the properties.

The swimming pool is surrounded by a terrace to take maximum advantage of the sun, and equipped with sun-loungers. All set within mature grounds of three acres (1.2 hectares), the park contains a great variety of shrubs and trees, several of which are more than 300 years old. Purpose designed parking is available on site, easily accessible to the gites.

Domaine de la Garenne is in a rural location on the outskirts of the market village of Sauze Vaussais, peaceful amidst fields of sunflowers and corn, closely bordering the neighbouring departments of Charente and Vienne.

About our region

In Deux Sevres, closely bordering the departments of Charente and Vienne, Sauze Vaussais is a village within easy reach of the N10.

Markets are held twice weekly and the village is well provided with a range of shops and services including two boulangeries, a small hotel, bars and restaurant. There is an outdoor pool, tennis courts and small lake with picnic area, children’s play area and walks.

Close at hand are the towns of Civray and Ruffec, both on the river Charente, and ideal picnic spots.

Also close by, are the towns of Chef Boutonne and Melle, the former boasting its Chateau de Javarzay and  the latter with three Romanesque churches and Roman silver mine. Both have ancient lavoirs – communal areas where women-folk met to do their laundry in special areas adjacent to the river.

There are no fewer than 49 Romanesque churches in the surrounding towns and villages, one of which is in Sauze Vaussais.

Poitou-Charentes

This vast region of France is one of many contrasts, enjoying a verdant landscape, yet second only to the Mediterranean coast in hours of sunshine.

Comprising 4 departments – Deux Sevres, Charente-Maritime, Charente and Vienne, it is steeped in history, with mediaeval (especially Romanesque) churches and sculpture much in evidence.

The region stretches from the Atlantic coast with the towns of La Rochelle, Royan, Saintes, through the Marais Poitevin (Venise Vert) and its network of waterways, to the Charente River, meandering peacefully through picturesque towns and villages, flanked by vineyards near Cognac, on its way to the sea.

Getting there

Airports at Poitiers and La Rochelle are convenient for this region. Car hire is available at both airports.
