  About our property

Set in large, secluded gardens, these tastefully restored cottages offer top quality accommodation for anyone looking for a truly relaxing holiday. Close to the amenities of the attractive market town of St Jean d’Angely and ideally placed for exploring this beautiful region of the Charente Maritime our many guests have loved it here.

Our Gites

All the gîtes are furnished to a high standard with well equipped kitchens, modern bathrooms, good quality beds made up with cotton bedding, satellite TV, DVD players and a good supply of books, CDs, DVDs and games. Electric fans are provided and heating is available for those cooler evenings, off-season.

Each gîte has its own patio area with tables, chairs and barbeque – the perfect spot to sit and enjoy a meal prepared from the produce bought at the local markets or those hand-prepared meals from the charcuterie counter so beloved of the French.

The tranquil grounds of Les Grands Arbres extend to 5000m2, including attractive garden areas, an orchard, a large field and a parking area. There is also an open-plan barn with table tennis, table football and other outdoor games. There is a swing set plus a variety of bikes are available for your use (please bring your own safety helmets). Top up your tan on the lovely sheltered terrace around the 10 x 5 metre heated swimming pool, with its sun loungers, tables and parasols.

The pool is normally open mid May to mid September and is protected by a security railing.

Please note that unfortunately pets are not invited and smoking is not allowed within the gîtes.

The bathroom upstairs has a full-size bath with shower, w.c. and wash-hand basin. Downstairs there is an additional shower, w.c. and wash-hand basin. Two comfortable single bed settees and wardrobe space is available on the ground floor for additional flexibility.

Le Châtaignier (sleeps 2/4)

The ground floor is open plan with a cottage style kitchen incorporating cooker, microwave, fridge and washing machine, a dining and lounge area, with satellite TV, DVD and CD players.

Open-tread wooden stairs lead to a full height double bedroom, with fitted wardrobes, and a separate shower room with w.c. and wash-hand basin. The hall upstairs has additional wardrobe space and a lovely view over the apple orchard. A comfortable double bed-settee is provided on the ground floor.

About our region

The village of Ste Même is well known in the area for its large impressive houses, dating back to when Cognac was produced in the area. It has a general store, a part-time post office and a bar/ restaurant which provides good value lunches, Tuesday to Sunday, and will serve evening meals providing you book in advance.

Saint Jean d'Angely is only 10 minutes away by car and this lively little town has an excellent market twice a week (Wednesday and Saturday), a wide selection of cafés and restaurants, supermarkets, an indoor water complex, a cinema and interesting historical buildings.

Saintes, 20 minutes to the south, provides an even wider selection of shops and restaurants and is a town of architectural and historical interest.

Cognac, a beautiful old town, can be reached in less than 30 minutes and many of the Cognac producers provide interesting tours of their premises, with the opportunity to do some tasting at the end!

Ste Même is also well placed for visiting: the vibrant towns of La Rochelle and Royan on the coast; the picturesque islands of Île de Ré and Île d’Oléron; Rochefort with its naval history; Niort and the area known as 'Green Venice', as well as many interesting little villages set in the attractive surrounding countryside.

The golden sandy beaches just south of La Rochelle can easily be reached in under an hour. Within the area there is horse riding, kayaking, go-karting and golf.

Interesting family days out include: Futuroscope, a theme park just outside Poitiers; the well laid out zoo at Le Palmyre near Royan, The Valley of the Monkeys near Romagne and Paleosite, an interactive theme park just outside Saintes.

An information pack on places to visit and things to do is available in the gîtes and further information can be obtained from the tourist office in Saint Jean d'Angely.

Getting there

The village of Sainte Même can be reached within less than 15 minutes of Junction 34 of the A10 (take the Saint Jean d'Angely turnoff). It is approximately four and a half hours drive from the ports of Caen and St Malo.

There is also the option of flying to: La Rochelle, Poitiers, Bordeaux or Angouleme airports.
