We are now looking forward to providing a hospitable welcome to our guests in an environment in which you can relax and enjoy your holiday.

Our Gites

All gîtes are furnished to a high standard and well equipped with kitchen utensils and ample crockery, cutlery and glassware, and a stock of books, CDs and some DVDs. We also have a number of games which can be borrowed. Each gîte has its own patio area with tables, chairs and barbeque. Heating is available in every room for those cooler evenings, off-season. Bed linen and towels for use in the house are provided. Please bring your own towels for use by the pool or at the beach.

The grounds of Les Grands Arbres extend to 5000m2, including attractive garden areas, an orchard, a large field and off street parking. There is also an open-plan barn with table tennis, table football, plus a variety of bikes are available for your use (please bring your own safety helmets). A 10 x 5 metre heated swimming pool with sun loungers, tables and parasols within its own fenced area.

Please note that no pets are permitted and smoking is not allowed within the gîtes.

Le Sapin (sleeps 6/8)

Le Sapin (Pine Cottage) provides accommodation for 6 to 8 people.

Downstairs is a large open plan living area (19ft by 26 ft) incorporating a well-equipped kitchen (cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, washing machine, dishwasher), dining area and comfortable seating with TV, DVD and CD players.

Attractive open-tread wooden stairs lead up to 3 full-height bedrooms, one double and two twin, all with fitted wardrobes and bedside tables. The bathroom upstairs has a full-size bath with shower, w.c. and wash-hand basin. Downstairs there is an additional shower, w.c. and wash-hand basin. A comfortable double bed settee and wardrobe space is available on the ground floor for additional flexibility.

Le Châtaignier (sleeps 2/4)

Le Châtaignier (Chestnut Cottage), for 2 to 4 people, was originally an open-fronted barn and it has now been clad with chestnut wood to reflect the style of the local agricultural buildings.

The ground floor is open plan with a cottage style kitchen incorporating cooker, microwave, fridge and washing machine, a dining and lounge area, with TV, DVD and CD players.

Open-tread wooden stairs lead to a full height double bedroom, with fitted wardrobes and separate shower room with w.c. and wash-hand basin. The hall upstairs provides additional wardrobe space and has a lovely view over the apple orchard. A comfortable double bed-settee is provided on the ground floor.

Le Châtaignier benefits from patio areas front and back, allowing you to enjoy both the morning, late afternoon and evening sun.

Le Pommier (sleeps 2)

Le Pommier (Apple-Tree Cottage) is a delightful ground floor studio flat in what used to be a small distillery.

The kitchen area has a cooker, microwave, fridge, washing machine and dining space. The living area incorporates a bed settee and wardrobe space. The shower room has a cubicle shower, w.c. and wash hand basin.

Well equipped for two people, Le Pommier would also make an ideal quiet retreat for Gran or Grandpa while the rest of the family is accommodated in le Sapin or le Châtaignier.

About our region

The village has a number of large houses from the time when it was a wine-growing area for cognac and the local drink 'pineau des charentes'. Les Grands Arbres is a 'charentaise' style house in the middle of the village and in the past had its own distillery.

The village has a general store (opening hours 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday morning, closed Thursday), a part-time post office and a bar/ restaurant, La Cervoise, which provides excellent value lunches, Tuesday to Sunday, and will serve evening meals provided you book in advance.

Saint Jean d'Angely is only 12 minutes away by car and this lively little town has a market twice a week (Wednesday and Saturday), a good selection of restaurants, supermarkets, an indoor water complex, a cinema and some interesting historical sites. Saintes, 20 minutes to the south, provides a wide selection of shops and restaurants and is a town of architectural and historical interest. Cognac, a beautiful old town, can be reached in less than 30 minutes and many of the Cognac producers provide interesting tours of their premises.

Ste Même is also well placed for visiting: La Rochelle and Royan on the coast; Rochefort with its interesting museum Le Corderie Royale and 'Hermoine' a replica of Lafayette's sailing ship; Niort and the area known as 'Green Venice', as well as many interesting little villages with their Romanesque churches and markets. Within the area there is horse riding, kayaking, go-karting and golf. The beaches just south of La Rochelle can be reached in under an hour.

Interesting family days out include: Futuroscope, a theme park just outside Poitiers; Le Palmyre Zoo near Royan, The Valley of the monkeys near Romagne and Paleosite just outside Saintes.

An information pack on places to visit and things to do is available in the gîtes and further information can be obtained from the tourist office in Saint Jean d'Angely.

Getting there

The village of Sainte Même can be reached within less than 15 minutes of Junction 34 of the A10 (take the Saint Jean d'Angely turnoff).

There is also the option of flying to: La Rochelle with Ryanair, Flybe.com or Easyjet: or Poitiers with Ryanair :or Bordeaux with British Airways, BMIbaby or KLM.
