About our property (sleeps 2-9+Baby)

Le Grand Bois, a restored, spacious Charentais farmhouse with attached barn and stable (empty except for the pool equipment!), has thick, stone walls, exposed beams and shuttered windows.

The ground floor has a large entrance hall, a living room, dining-kitchen room and a back kitchen, each of which is 6.5m x 6.5m. There are two bathrooms, one with two washbasins, a toilet, a bath and a separate shower; the second has a washbasin and toilet. All floors are tiled.

The house has three fireplaces with inserts and are not used during the normal rental season. The kitchens have a gas-electric stove, microwave, coffee maker, two refrigerators, dishwasher, toaster etc. Cooking and eating utensils are provided. There are books and a radio-CD player with some CDs.

The first (sleeping floor) has three bedrooms: a large master bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a second with a double bed, and a third room with five single beds. A small child's cot is available. Both the first and third bedrooms have large oak beams. All floors are wood with carpeting.

The famhouse is secluded from the other three properties in the hamlet. Both the front and rear look out over farmland.

There is a 5m x 10m in-ground pool at the rear of the house, a vine-covered pergola, shade and fruit trees, roses and hollyhocks, as well as a portable barbecue and garden chairs and tables.

This lovely restored farmhouse filled with charm is our vacation home and we find it relaxing and comfortable. We enjoy our home and the surrounding region and we trust that others will as well. We hope that those staying in Le Grand Bois will also treat it as a family home!

About our region

Our vacation home, a Charentaise-style farmhouse which we call Le Grand Bois, is situated at the southern tip of the View from the rear of the houseCharente Maritime. Located in a small hamlet, the house is surrounded by vineyards and family farms with crops of corn, sunflowers and various grains.

The general vicinity around the house is criss-crossed with small, paved farming roads ideal for walking, jogging and cycling. Referred to frequently as the 'authentic France' with its unspoiled coast and countryside, numerous small farms, historical Romanesque churches in every town and village, and the second highest amount of sunshine in France, the region is an ideal location in which to relax and smell the flowers!

The hamlet of Grand Bois with its four homes is within five minutes of the town of Mirambeau. The town has a Saturday morning open market, several bakeries, a pastry shop, a butcher shop, restaurants, a bank with ATM, a supermarket, a Maison de Presse with international newspapers, tourist bureau, tennis courts and a Renaissance Château, now a four star hotel and restaurant. As an added local touch, a butcher and baker drive by the house on a weekly basis and toot their horn!

The attractive town of Jonzac with its thermal baths and recently opened water park is a ten minute drive. Beaches on the Gironde Estuary are within 25 minutes and the open Atlantic, including the Côte Sauvage north of Royan and the Zoo at Palmyre, are less than an hour away.

Cognac, with its famous distilleries, the summer art and music festivals at Saintes and throughout the region, the opportunity to see films at nearby St Genis de Saintonge, and the coastal charms of Mortagne, Mescher, Talmont and St George de Didonne, all contribute to the area's attractiveness.

The wine of the Charente-Maritime is good, but the better wines are near Blaye, St Emilion, and the environs closer to Bordeaux. However, in addition to world-class cognac, you must try Pineau de Charente, a local aperitif made up of a blend of unfermented grape juice and cognac which have been aged in oak barrels.

Visit the Château de Beaulon in nearby Saint Dizant du Gua and sample Pineau and Cognac while admiring the Château's gardens and 'blue pools.'

Throughout the region, sea food and melons are outstanding, as is most local produce, including honey.

Getting there

Le Grand Bois is 50 kilometres northeast of Bordeaux and 500 kilometres southwest of Paris. One takes exit 37 (Mirambeau) off the A10, the Aquitaine autoroute. Mirambeau is two minutes from the exit. One can fly to Bordeaux from either London or Paris and rent a car at the Merignac Airport.

There is a train from Paris to Bordeaux, as well as from Paris to Angoulême, with its special bus link to Jonzac, minutes from Mirambeau. One can take the Channel Tunnel from the United Kingdom and drive from Calais.
