Whilst staying at La Côte du Drou you can discover many wonderful places in Normandy. If you wish to explore the district, there are plenty of interesting trips to make. Even driving around is a splendid
experience. The little lanes with hardly any traffic, the
small villages and all the magnificent churches, abbyes
and castles spread all over In Normandy you will find many castles. The castle of Beaumesnil might be one of the purest renaissance castles of France. Its just a one hour drive away. A two hours drive to the west, almost in Brittany, brings you to the famous Mont Saint Michel. This abbey was build into the sea. At La Côte du Drou
you are 50 miles from the coast, with Heading for the east, you will find Paris about a two hours drive. Visiting the Château of Versailles is an interesting day-trip. Also to the east you can visit the city of Chartres. The enormous cathedral with it's many sculptures inside is worth seeing. La Côte du Drou is situated in the Orne department, an area dedicated to horses. In the past King Louis XIV investigated where in France to find the best place to breed horses for the army. This resulted in the foundation of the illustrious 'Haras du Pin', the national stud of France. During the season there is an impressive presentation every Thursday afternoon. You will find the Haras du Pin only five miles from La Côte du Drou. Just a few miles down the road you will find the little villages of Trun and Chambois. Nowadays sleepy villages, but during the invasion of 1944 they were the centre of the German defeat. The nazi's were encircled by the Allies in the well- known Falaise-gap. The only 'escape' was the small Trun to Chambois road. This road became their 'Corridor of Death' and the succesfull end of the invasion of Normandy. At this historical place you can visit the museum of Coudehard-Mont Ormel with its celebrated monument. On the Normandy-coast, between Caen and Cherbourg, you can pay a visit to the famous D-Day-beaches. With their many museums and monuments and the remains from World-War II this area is one enormous war-monument of memories. Very impressive is the American cemetery in Collevile-sur-Mer (Omaha Beach). Almost every American president has since honoured the resting veterans with his presence. The picturesque city of Honfleur is situated at the Seine estuary. This town, with its old harbour right at the centre, is dominated by art galleries and restaurants. In the region the restaurants are well known for the sea-food they serve. Many Parisians travel to Honfleur during the weekend, just to enjoy a plate of 'fruit de mer'. Famous artists were born in Honfleur, for instance Eric Satie and Eugène Boudin. They are honoured with their own museum. Another great French artist was Claude Monet. He lived and worked in Giverny for over fourty years. Besides his paintings he left us the famous Gardens of Monet. If you are interested in art and gardening, it's absolutely a must. The auto-racing circuit of Le Mans is to be reached after a one hour drive, straight to the south. In June you can visit the exciting 24 hours of Le Mans. The Calvados department is well known for its apples and the many distilleries for calvados and cidre. Most of them are happy to show you round and let you taste their products. The little village of Camembert
(one of the three famous cheeses of Normandy) is only an
half an-hour-drive. Easily accessible
from the channel port of Le Havre. For further details and photographs please visit the owner's website at: To book, please contact the owners:
