The Haven is a small guest house in rural Normandy, France, offering B&B and Self-Catering accommodation. We have renovated an old stone farmhouse, to provide comfortable accommodation, whilst retaining many of the original features.

The house is in an elevated, peaceful setting, south-facing, with an acre of garden and beautiful views. It is situated on the outskirts of a small hamlet, in unspoilt, rolling countryside, halfway between St Lo and Mont St Michel.

The nearest market town is Villedieu-les-Poeles, less than 15 minutes away.

There is a large, mature garden at the front of the house, which is not overlooked, and which slopes gently down to the wildlife pond, and a productive, organic vegetable garden. 

There are many trees, a variety of flowering shrubs, far-reaching views, and quiet places to sit and relax. Meals can be eaten in the garden, under the apple trees, weather permitting.

There is a cider apple orchard to the side of the house, and a small paddock at the back. The local farmer often uses this area for some of his sheep and lambs - which helps us keep the grass down.

A copious breakfast is served in the farmhouse kitchen or lounge-diner, and sometimes, weather permitting, in the garden.

Evening meals are available on your day of arrival, if booked in advance. These simple wholefood meals are in the main vegetarian, but fish and free-range poultry can also be included on the menu. Wherever possible, ingredients are organic, and fruit and vegetables come mostly from the garden.

For all B & B bookings, a 20% deposit is required, which can be paid in sterling on-line at our website via Paypal or by sterling or euro cheque. Deposits are non-returnable unless cancellations are made at least a month before start of holiday.

N.B. Balances are payable at the end of your stay, in euros. We regret that we do not have credit card facilities for this purpose

Self-catering:

The Gite (1 bedroom, sleeps 2/4)

Converted stable building at one end of the farmhouse on 3 levels.

Ground Floor - Private entrance leading to:

Sunny, spacious kitchen-diner, well-equipped for up to 4 people, with full-sized cooker, fridge/freezer, washing machine, microwave, electric kettle, toaster and coffee maker.

Very light sitting room, carpeted, with double French doors leading to a small balcony, overlooking the garden and views. Comfortable, double sofa bed, Freeview satellite TV, radio/cassette player, CD/DVD player, games, jigsaws, and tourist guides. WIFI internet facilities by arrangement.

Second Floor

Carpeted, double bedroom with exposed beams, panoramic views.

En-suite bath/shower room.

N.B. We regret the gite has no wheel-chair access. We also regret we are unable to accept pets.

Self-catering: The Farmhouse (3 bedrooms, sleeps 7)

The farmhouse accommodation (minus the attic) can be rented out exclusively to self-catering guests.

There is a spacious, comfortable living room, with access to the garden.  There are CD, TV, and DVD facilities, plus a log fire for cooler evenings.  WIFI Internet access by arrangement.

The kitchen-diner is a large, sunny room, with double French doors to the garden. 

There is a downstairs cloakroom which also houses the washing machine.

On the first floor there is a spacious landing, with accommodation as follows:

Family room overlooking garden, with double plus single bed, and en-suite facilities.

Adjacent children's room with 2 single beds.

Double room, also overlooking garden, with double bed and en-suite facilities.

We can thus accommodate a maximum of seven guests in the farmhouse.

Bookings are normally by the week, Saturday to Saturday.

About our region

Our house is in the small, friendly hamlet of Le Mesnil Sauvage, with the village of Montbray about a mile away. It is dairy farming country, with gently undulating hills, green valleys, and many lakes and rivers - an area of great natural beauty.

Villedieu-les-Poeles, the nearest market town, is less than 15 mins. drive. This is a bustling, colourful town, which is particularly well-known for its copper workshops, some of which date back to the 12th century.

In addition, there are pewter, lace, pottery, and clock workshops, plus a bell foundry, all of which are open to the public. The town has been called "le fleuron du patrimoine artisanal normand" (the jewel of Norman artisanal heritage). There are many shops, cafes and restaurants, and every Tuesday morning there is a bustling outdoor market in the centre of town. 

The region's strong artisanal tradition is celebrated in outdoor events throughout the summer. Almost every town and village has its annual fête or carnival, and even open-air jumble/boot sales have become popular in recent years.

Within half an hour's drive of Villedieu-les-Poeles is Granville, the nearest seaside town, and also the larger towns of Coutances (with its beautiful cathedral), Avranches, and Vire. 

The Haven is about 45 minutes away from Mont St Michel, Bayeux and the D-Day Normandy Landing beaches. 

Getting there

We are easily accessible from the Channel ports of Cherbourg (1.5 hrs), Caen (less than an hour), or Le Havre (1.45 hrs). Access to the new A.84 motorway (Junction 38) is 10-15 minutes away. Calais and Boulogne are approx. 4.5 hours away. For those wishing to come by train, there is a direct service from Paris to Villedieu-les-Poeles(3 hours). We are of course happy to collect guests from the station, if required.

Ryan Air fly from Stanstead to Dinard/Plertuis (near St Malo), an hour and a half's drive from the Haven. Car hire is available from the airport.
