Leisure: Places to See Whilst staying at La Ferme Des Montaigu, why not visit some of the many places to see in beautiful Normandy? Here are just a few: Le Mont Saint Michel Rocky, cone-shaped islet in northwestern France, in the Gulf of Saint-Malo, connected by a causeway with the mainland. The islet, celebrated for its Benedictine abbey, has small houses and shops on its lowest level. Above these stand the monastic buildings, many of which date from the 13th century and are considered outstanding examples of Gothic architecture. The entire islet is crowned by the abbey church, about 73 m (about 240 ft) above sea level. D-Day Landings, Beaches & Memorials The Allied invasion of Hitler's "Fortress Europe" began in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944 when American and British paratroops dropped behind the intended invasion beaches to disrupt German communications. At dawn, the sea invasion began as an Allied Armada disgorged thousands of troops at five beaches along France's Normandy coast. Bayeaux Tapestry The Bayeux Tapestry is preserved and displayed in Bayeux, in Normandy, France. Nothing is known for certain about the tapestrys origins. The first written record of the Bayeux Tapestry is in 1476 when it was recorded in the cathedral treasury at Bayeux as "a very long and narrow hanging on which are embroidered figures and inscriptions comprising a representation of the conquest of England". Villedieu Les Pôeles One of the older workshops in Villedieu Les Pôeles still in activity. You could admire and appreciate the gestures, the old tools of the tinsmiths, weldsmiths, polishers and hammer smiths. For an attractive visit, you could watch a 15 minutes film in English, on a large screen, so that you could see how the Copper Workshop combines tradition and progress. Getting there By ferry: There are regular ferries from Portsmouth & Poole to Cherbourg and Caen, Le Harve & St Malo. Also Newhaven to Le Harve & Dieppe and Dover to Boulogne.
