About our region

Cambremer is a small town approximately 20 miles east of Caen, south of Deauville, 2 miles north of the RN13. It is 40 minutes' drive from the ferry ports of Le Havre or Caen. Cambremer has approx. 1200 inhabitants, but is more important than it may seem since it is the 'head of the canton'. Consequently it boasts a good selection of shops (boulangerie is 150 yards/metres from the house), bank, pharmacy, 2 restaurants, bar, garage and a post office. There is no through traffic through the town.

On the edge of town there is a traditional Calvados (apple brandy) distillery which you can visit, with tours in English. Cambremer is also at the heart of the 'Cider Route', with visits to farms where you can see (and taste!) cider being made the traditional way. The tourist information office can give you details of these as well as organised visits to the many stud farms, chateaux and churches in the nearby villages and surrounding countryside. It is also good walking country - a map at the house shows circuits of 'green' and country lanes starting 50 yards/metres from the front door.

Market day is Friday, with special Sunday markets during July and August.

Above all, Cambremer is real France, chiming church clock and all!

Cambremer is an ideal touring centre. Honfleur

Within 30 minutes drive:

Sandy beaches of stylish Deauville and Cabourg, Honfleur, a picturesque port, artist's paradise with many galleries.

Caen with its ancient battlements, museums, abbeys, Peace Memorial, and, of course, shopping!  Massive out-of-town shopping complex off RN13.

Falaise with its spectacular and dramatically-restored castle, birthplace of William the Conqueror.

Trouville, where the Parisians holiday, renowned for its seafood restaurants.

Lisieux, with the massive Basilica, in memory of Sainte Therese. Several chateaux, including Crevecoeur. Pegasus Bridge and other D-day sites

And a little further afield:

D-Day landing beaches (5/6 June 1944 - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword) and Arromanches - Mulberry harbour and 'living museum.'

Bayeux with the 11th century tapestry depicting the 1066 invasion of England.
Les Andelys, with the castle (Chateau Gaillard) commissioned by Richard the Lionheart, overlooking the Seine Valley.

Monet's Garden at Giverny.

Festyland children's theme park in western outskirts of Caen.

Suisse Normande region (deep wooded gorges cut by the River Orne) with Bagnoles de L'Orne (largest spa in Western France).

Mont St Michel (spectacular!)

Rouen...Dieppe...The Brotonne National Park.....and Paris, just 2½ hours by autoroute.
