The Loire Châteaux Country

Pontlevoy is very well situated and very central for visiting the main chateaux. (Please click on the map to enlarge)

Pontlevoy is 13 kms South of Chaumont, 25kms South of Blois and 8 kms North of Montrichard (a medieval market town where an old bridge spans the River Cher, featuring a swimming-pool and a sandy beach with water sport activities).

In the village, the 18th century Abbey with its gothic church is an impressive building housing the new European American Centre for International Education.

Also in the village is the Street Museum depicting 20th century rural life.

The highly regarded Music Festival is housed in the Abbey, and other local fêtes & entertainments take place during the Summer season.

Wine storerooms in the village are open to visitors for wine tasting and a famous farm in the village produces goats' cheese.

A few miles brings you to troglodite dwellings, and caves which are used for mushroom growing and storing and maturing thousands of wine bottles (Cabernet, Gamay, Sauvignon and Créman de Loire are famous cépages).

Pontlevoy is just 13 km south of Chaumont, a beatiful château overlooking the river Loire where the international Garden Festival takes place every year from May to October, enclosing 25 gardens and astonishing canvas structures; a real attraction for the whole family.

Blois, 25 km away is an attractive town with its pedestrian precincts, its château offering a truly architectural lesson with its three different styles and its English verson of 'Son et Lumière' every Wednesday night.

The unique Maison de la Magie opposite the château offers exhibition halls, special effect rooms and theatre with an original show and a tour of magic and illusionism throughout the ages.

There is also a stud farm and many more unusual museums, (Résistance and Déportation, The Musée de l'Objet for contemporary art lovers), or you can take a tour of the old city in a horse drawn carriage.

Montrichard is 8 km away. It is a market town famous for its sandy beach on the River Cher, its swimming pool, its wine cellars with their maze of subterranean galleries, its keep dating from the 11th century with afternoon shows in high season, including amazing battles with horses, spears and battleaxes. The evening shows include 200 artists, a team of stupefying stunt riders, light effects and music. Not to be missed!

Alternatively you can relax and take a cruise on the 'Leonardo da Vinci along the river. The town of Saint-Aignan offers swimming, rowing, canoeing and pedal boating.

Chenonceau, 17 km away, is one of the most visited châteaux in France. It has beautiful gardens and floral decorations, dedicated to the famous Queens Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici.

Visit the waxworks and the 'Ladies' Gallery,' which recounts the main events and the famous people who lived here. Chenonceau can also be visited by cruising on the River Cher with an optional meal on board.

On the south bank of the Loire is the pretty town of Amboise, with its fortified château dominating the town centre. Nearby is Le Clos Lucé, home of Leonardo da Vinci for three years from 1516. An exhibition of full size models of his inventions can be seen at the house, as well as repoductions of his most famous paintings, including The Mona Lisa. The gardens of Le Clos Lucé are extensive, and a small tea room is available for refeshments. Leonardo died in France and is buried in the grounds of the chateau.

There are so many things to see that a fortnight's stay is highly recommended. (A 10% discount is specially offered to visitors keen on a longer stay).
