Located in the heart of 'Le Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin', we are ideally situated to explore the varied and beautiful attractions of the Haute-Vienne, Dordogne and Charente departments.

L'Hirondelle is set in the rolling Limousin countryside overlooking a wooded river valley. We are only 2 kms from the pretty market town of St Mathieu, which provides full amenities including a petrol station, banks and a supermarket

About our accommodation

Bed & Breakfast

Our restful rooms await you after a busy day.

Choose from the splendour of our four poster double room, or the airy elegance of our twin room. Both rooms are tastefully decorated and benefit from luxury en-suite facilities. Tea and coffee making facilities available in each room.

Our four poster room can easily transform into a family room with the addition of a comfortable double sofabed.

Extra bedrooms in our luxury Gîte are also available on a Bed and Breakfast basis subject to availability. All rooms in the Gîte are to the same standard as the house. L'Hirondelle also benefits from full central heating and a wood burning stove in the lounge for the cooler months.


For the comfort of all, L'Hirondelle operates a no smoking policy within the house.

Fresh croissants & bread await you at breakfast along with a selection of fruit, yoghurts and preserves. Served with a choice of fruit juice, coffee or English tea if preferred. Breakfast is usually taken on the sunny terrace in the summer months.

A four course evening meal is also available by arrangement on selected evenings and is taken 'en famille' (with the hosts and other guests). The price for this is €18 per person, child's meal at €9 per child up to the age of 10. All meals are homecooked using fresh local or homegrown produce wherever possible.*

Complimentary red or white wine will be included with your evening meal.
From May to September we also offer a regular Barbecue.

  • All prices are per room per night and include a continental breakfast.
  • Should both rooms in the main house already be reserved, we are also able to offer accomodation in our adjacent Gîte on a bed and breakfast basis. (All rooms are furnished to the same standard as the house and include full en-suite facilities)
  • A reduced rate for single occupancy is offered.
  • Evening meal €18 per person per night, child's meal at €9 per child, up to the age of 10.
  • Families wanting to make use of the sofa bed in our Four-Poster bedroom for their children, will be charged at €7 extra per child per night.

Self Catering Gite ( sleeps 8)

A private entrance leads to your own secluded garden and terrace, overlooking a wooded river valley. The views over the surrounding countryside from the front of the barn are fabulous in all seasons of the year, with the rolling hills, fields, and woodland.

Inside you will find an open plan living and dining area with exposed beams. In one corner there is a well appointed kitchen which looks out over the garden and fields, and also a cloakroom.

A galleried staircase leads onto the first floor where four beautifully furnished bedrooms are situated, all with en-suite facilities.

There are two double rooms featuring king-sized beds and two twin rooms.

L'Hirondelle Gîte also benefits from full central heating for the cooler months.

Your hosts are in the same hamlet and on hand to offer advice or help with planning each day to make the most of your precious holiday.

Towels and bed-linen are included and beach towels are available at a small charge.A washing machine is also available for use in the host's utility room.

  • All prices are per week including bed linen, towels, electricity, and water. (Please note the low season rentals will incur an additional charge for utilities at the local rates.)
  • A cleaning charge of €50 per stay is also payable.
  • A 25% deposit is required on booking confirmation with the balance being due 8 weeks prior to arrival.
  • Cheques in Sterling or Euros are accepted, unfortunately we have to make a small charge to cover banking charges of cheques that are from accounts outside of France.
  • A full set of terms and conditions will be sent out by email or post on request.

About our region

Discover the magnificent Châteaux on the Richard the Lionheart route. There are 16 in total from the magical castle at Montbrun, to the majestic hilltop chateau at Rochechouart.

Limoges, the porcelain capital of France, is only 45 minutes away.

The beautiful cities of Périgueux and Angoulême are also under an hour away. A special mention must go to Brantôme, 40 minutes south, known as the Venice of the Périgord. Surrounded on all sides by water with a magnificent centrepiece abbey overlooking the weir on the river Dronne.

Unlock the sights, sounds and tastes of the local markets with the largest weekly regional market at Piégut, only 15 minutes away by car.

For the more energetic we can guide you to the many activities available in the area such as Horse riding, fishing, cycling, Kart Racing, swimming, golf and sailing. For walkers you are in the midst of a great many 'Randonnées' (marked walks). Two of these pass within 400 metres of L'Hirondelle, not for the faint hearted is the black walk, marked out over 45 kms.

The village of St Mathieu is also home to a picturesque leisure lake, which provides a sandy beach with supervised swimming, fishing, sailing and pedalo hire. A restaurant / bar are also open here throughout the day in summer.

St Mathieu also plays host to lively evening markets throughout the summer where you can purchase local produce, which is then cooked for you on a communal barbecue. Drinks and entertainment are also there to ensure a fantastic al-fresco experience.

However you may simply wish to unwind in our tranquil garden. A picnic table and sun loungers set amongst the shade of our trees are the perfect place to enjoy a cool drink on a hot summers day.

Getting there

L'Hirondelle can be found on the D87 (route de Chéronnac) 2kms from St Mathieu and signposted from the village.

Travelling to the region by car takes approximately 5/6 hours from Le Havre, or 7/8 hours from Calais. There are daily flights from Stansted to Limoges with Ryanair. Hire cars are available at the airport.
