The south of France at Roussillon Perpignan has already provided many memorable painting holidays. The mix of French and Catalan cultures here amongst the majestic Pyrenees, the sun drenched vineyards and the colour and history on the Cote vermeille.

Matisse is just one artist amongst many who found the peace, colour and light of this lovely region inspiring their work.

Your base in a traditional Catalan farmhouse in the most tranquil Jardins St.Jacques, a conservation area of small farms on the edge of Perpignan has inspired many. The painting and sketching opportunities here are quite exceptional and many just a stroll from the farmhouse.

Quite a number of visitors to this area have liked it so much, they have decided to live there. How's that for a compliment!

The Course Style

Our primary goal is to provide you with a gorgeous holiday setting that will blow your socks off in its stunning visual quality.

Our second is to ensure that you enjoy yourself having a great holiday

Third is to look for ways to inspire you and that you leave with much more than you arrived with in terms of ideas and confidence.

We have a whole stack of visually inspiring locations to take you to. But we do not publish a schedule that today at precisely 10am you will board the bus and you will go to xxx location. We prefer to hold the bank of options to suit what you would like to do, when you would like to do it and what the weather is doing.

If we have discovered a project to develop and you would enjoy a day or so at your holiday base exploring ideas then we will provide the ideal encouragement and environment for you to do just that.

We create plenty of time to stop for lunch and in good time for you to swim or sunbath or enjoy a glass of wine in the garden before dinner. As we said before, it’s a holiday.

We have found over the past 6 years with these courses that a very high proportion of artists want to be released from the trap of technique. So many folk have stopped enjoying painting because of too high a focus on how exactly things should be done. We spend more time helping artists to loosen up and get creative ideas going.

If your course leader is Terry White, then there will be focused sessions on exploring ideas with charcoal and pastels.

Terry will also introduce sessions combining digital photography and then exploring with digital software, various treatments. This computer multi-media approach has been of great interest to many.

If your course leader is Dawn Taylor then there will be focused sessions on watercolour and oils.

All in all we create an atmosphere of enjoyment, fun and experiment and from this comes flowing very freely – confidence.

The Tutors

Terry White
Painting and illustrating for 30 years and within the advertising industry, has commissioned and developed many paintings and illustrations across all mediums.

Terry has run the successful courses at the beautiful Perpignan base for the past 5 years and has helped many artists with his one to one coaching.

Coaching and tuition are two valuable aspects to an art course with Terry. Tuition is most suitable to those beginning or at intermediary level.

Dawn Taylor

Dawn is a very experienced painter and has been working on commissions for the past 15 years. Her specialism is in watercolour.

Beautiful base area

The Catalan farmhouse, which has nearly 4500 sqm of gardens is bordered by an Apricot orchard, Olive grove and vine and palm tree nurseries.

The house is situated approximately in the centre of a unique conservation area of fruit, herb and vegetable farms and tree nurseries called Les Jardins des St.Jacques.

There is a lovely restaurant in walking distance from the farmhouse and 'Les Jardins SJ' is also home to a historic and picturesque village and two, first class vineyards.

The colourful and exotic city of Perpignan Right on the doorstep of Les Jardins des StJacques is the city of Perpignan.

It takes two minutes by car and is a lovely walk from the farmhouse.

It is hard to think how anyone would want for more from a city. It is full of sophisticated shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and music clubs. There are many interesting festivals held in the city during the year.

The old quarter of the city is home to several multi-cultural food markets and full of fascinating Catalan architecture.

The icing on the cake is that almost at every turn, the city is full of exotic palm trees.

The Roussillon Area

This is a truly superb region for any type of holiday you could wish for and at any time of year. Roussillon is the sunniest part of France with app. 320 sunshine days a year with the autumn being a real treat and break from colder parts of Europe.

The Mediterranean resorts of Canet, Barcares, St.Cyprien and Argeles all with marvellous beaches are all just minutes away.

The famous and beautiful Collioure, Ceret and Figueres in Spain are loaded with artistic history.

The majestic Pyrenees wrap themselves around Roussillon and tumble into the Med, the lush countryside is quite simply carpeted with sun baked vineyards.

If all that was not enough, the lovely Costa Brava of Spain is Roussillon's southern neighbour.

Getting there

You can fly direct to Perpignan with Ryanair, Flybe and BMI baby. You can also get flights to Girona in the Costa Brava and Carcassonne. Both these airports are about an hour away.

You can arrive direct by Fast TGV train to Perpignan with just one change from the eurostar from London Waterloo to Lille and then direct TGV from Lille to Perpignan. A very pleasant way to arrive. It should be possible to collect you from Perpignan airport or rail station. There is a taxi and train service to Perpignan from Girona and a taxi service from Carcassonne.
