About our region

Languedoc Roussillon is a largely wine growing region which has remained a guarded secret until 1990’s as opposed to the France’s other half of Mediterranean beaches of highly developed Cote d’Azur (French Riviera). This beautiful vista has not always belonged to France. Not until 1659, when the Treaty of the Pyrenees saw peace between France and Spain, did Rousillon become French and the international border shifted southwards.

Pyrenées Orientales is the department which borders Spain. This is French Catalunya with 30% of its population being Catalan; it is extremely cosmopolitan and culturally colourful.

The Albères is the mountain chain which forms the eastern end of the Pyrenees separating France from Spain. They are covered with thick pine forests, valleys and rivers. The foothills of the Albères are dotted by charming, tranquil, picture postcard medieval villages which include Montesquieu. They all enjoy both stunning mountain views as well as sea views.

The village of Montesquieu is situated at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level on the lower slopes of the Albères mountains with a 12th century church and a ruined chateau. Excellent walks rich in wildlife begin at the doorstep. The variety of flora and fauna is exceptional. Tennis is available in the village and riding stables a few minutes away. The climate is of course Mediterranean with approximately 300 days of sunshine.

The nearest large town Le Boulou is 5 km (3,5 miles) to the house. It has all amenities i.e supermarkets, shops, bars cafés, restaurants, banks, etc including a municipal outdoor swimming pool and a casino.Le Boulou and the Cerdagne region is also well known for their thermal spas.

The nearest city and airport Perpignan is half an hour drive to the village. It is the most southern city of mainland France with sites of historic interest, art galleries, chic boutiques, cafés and restaurants offering cuisine from most parts of the world. Its major tourist attraction is the Palace of the Kings of Majorca.

A short drive over the border into Spain brings you to Figueras which is home to the Dali museum. An hour and a half on the motorway will take you into Barcelona.

Montesquieu is approximately an hour and a half away from some of the French skiing resorts. Andorra with its duty free shopping is two and a half hours away.

The most loved, delightful fishing village of Collioure is 18 km (11 miles). Collioure, the jewel of the Cote Vermeille was favourite with Matisse, Bracque and Picasso. St.Cyprien is 15km, Argeles Plage 12km, Banyuls 20km and many other Mediterranean sea side resorts offering stunning beaches, some of the best fish restaurants and water sports. If you enjoy playing golf, there are courses within a short drive.
