About
our region The
Bizzie Lizzie Barn, in Olette near Prades, is set in the
Pyrenees Orientales, midway between the mountains and the
sea, with more than 300 days of sunshine all year round.
The area has spectacular scenery and is a walker's
paradise; the GR10 coast to coast path through the
Pyrenees being nearby,
as are the four nature reserves of Py, Mantet, Nyer and
Jujois, and the Gorge de la Carança. To the west are
mountains and lakes with fishing and horse riding, an
animal park at Les Angles and the nature reserve of Lac
de Bouillouses.
At Odeillo there is the biggest solar furnace in the
world. Nearby is Mont-Louis, the highest fortified town
in France, and home to the 1st Regiment of Infantry - the
only part of the French army, apart from the
paratroopers, allowed to wear the famous red beret.
In the winter there are downhill, cross country and
snowshoeing centres dotted across the area, including
Font Romeu, Les Angles and Formiguères. Not the Alps,
but inexpensive and very little queueing for ski lifts.
The duty free principality of Andorra is 2 hours away by
road. Closer to home, just 20 minutes away, are the
thermal pools and Hammam (or Turkish baths) at St
Thomas-Les-Bains to soak away aches and pains.
10 km to the east is the walled town of Villefranche de
Conflent, and above it Fort Libéria, defending the
Conflent Valley. There are caves and potholing in the
area. Vernet Les Bains is a spa town with its casino. You
can go
by 4x4 to visit the lovely 10th century Romanesque
monastery at St Martin de Canigou, perched on Mount
Canigou, sacred to all Catalans, or take the quiet road
around the foothills past the monastery of St Michel de
Cuxa, also open to the public, and continue into Prades
with its colourful Tuesday morning market, swimming pool,
cinema, and in August the Pablo Casals music festival.
For the intrepid cyclist this is Tour de France country.
You can play golf at Marcevol, go canyonning and rafting
from Marquixanes, or windsurfing and swimming at Lake
Vinça. Drive to the coast through orchards and vineyards
with cellars full of mellow Rousillon wines and local
Mediterranean delicacies.
Visit the Cote Vermeille with sandy beaches at
Argelès-Le Racou and St Cyprien, or the fauvist artists'
favourite fishing port of Collioure, with its Templar
castle, and sit by the harbour eating seafood. Drive
south along the coast to Port Vendres and Banyuls with
its Multimedia Marine Reserve. Continue into Spain to the
Costa Brava and Barcelona, returning via Figureas and the
Dali Museum.
Visit Perpignan - good restaurants, shops and the Rose
Palace of the Kings of Majorca. North along the coastal
plain is the 15th century Château de Salises with its
walls up to 29 feet thick, once on the border with Spain.
Nearby are the prehistoric remains of Homo Erectus -
Tautavel Man. Westwards are the mountain fortresses of
the Cathars, emerging from craggy peaks, whilst magical
Carcassonne has a 12th century fortress at its heart,
setting for the film 'Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves'.
Then travel back through the Corbières Fitou vineyards.
After enjoying the sights and activities in the area you
can relax in an oasis of calm at the Bizzie Lizzie Barn.
Bask on the sun terrace, dine al fresco under the vines,
or snuggle up by the fire with a good book and a glass of
wine.
The small but bustling village of Olette stands at more
than 2,000 feet on the RN116, which winds its way along
the wooded valley of the Têt, down to the plain and the
Mediterranean Sea, upwards to the Cerdagne Plateau and
the heights of the Pyrenees beyond.
The village has a tabac, a newsagent, bakery, butcher,
small supermarket, hotel, tourist office and café, as
well as a pharmacy and a doctor's surgery. On Thursdays
there is a small fruit, vegetable and local produce
market in the square. There is also a railway station
where you can catch the Little Yellow Train with its open
carriages - the narrow-gauge mountain railway that climbs
up into the Pyrenees from Villefranche de Conflent.
The Bizzie Lizzie Barn is in a quiet corner of the
village, hidden from view beyond high stone walls and
facing south. Parking is nearby with easy access to the
Barn by tarmac path.
Explore all the area has to offer, or simply relax and
unwind!
