About our region

Hérépian

Situated at the crossroads of the Mare and Orb Rivers, Hérépian is a classic South of France village, full of pretty stone houses and small, independent shops such as the legendary Charcuterie Aninat, which featured in Rick Stein's culinary tour of the Canal du Midi, three bakeries, a number of small bars, and L'Ochre Rouge, one of the best restaurants in the region.

Immediately beyond Hérépian, the Orb River Valley and the Regional Park of the High Languedoc, where rocky gorge competes with vineyard, garrigae and ancient viaduct to create one of the most enticing landscapes in the South of France.

Nearby the towns of Olargues, Bédarieux and St Gervais-sur-Mare have winding streets, traditional architecture, superb views, good restaurants and interesting markets and shops offering the best of local gastronomic and artisanal products

Take a trip on a traditional steam train up the Orb Valley, travelling under ancient aqueducts past fruit farms growing cherry, peach, apple and pear trees. There are olive groves and vineyards, but there are also sheep grazing in the fields.

The pilgrims on their way to St Jacques de Compostella in north-west Spain travelled by the Chemin d'Arles, which passes Hérépian and crosses the La Salvetat plateau, before arriving at Toulouse. Testament to the celestial beauty and calm of the landscape, many abbeys were built in the High Languedoc, from 1000 AD. Visits to Sorèze, Burlats and the Villemagne l'Argentière will not leave you disappointed.

Spend a morning wandering the narrow streets of the bustling town of Béziers - great for shopping with the major Paris deparment stores and a wide range of specialist boutiques. Visit the the reknowned markets of Pézenas to browse for books, antiques and artisan foods. And when satiated, retire to your luxury hotel accommodation at Le Couvent d'Hérépian, where bed and breakfast costs from as little as €159 per suite (two sharing).

Golf

An easy stroll from the Convent, the 9-hole golf course in Lamalou-les-Bains is one of the most beautiful in France. It is not a long course, but bathed in year round sunshine the tree-lined fairways and water hazards will test experts and beginners alike.

Part of the course follows the Orb River, so anything hit with a hook risks ending up in the Mediterranean! The '10th-hole' restaurant and bar has great views of the course and surrounding hills, as well as offering cold drinks and excellent lunches and dinners.

Golf in Languedoc Roussillion: Between Béziers and Pézenas, the Saint-Thomas course has 18 challenging holes and is only a 20 minutes drive from the Convent. The stunning 27 hole Ronald Frean designed course overlooking the Mediterranean at Cap D'Agde is an easy 40 minute drive, while the course at Carcassonne - again with fantastic scenery - is an hours drive. All welcome visitors with no restrictions.

Activities

Nature and sports enthusiasts will be delighted by the myriad possibilities of the Orb valley and the Regional Park of the High Languedoc, including walking, horse-riding, mountain biking, climbing the 100 waterfalls of the Gorges de Héric, potholing, whitewater rafting, canoeing, and fly and coarse fishing in the crystal clear waters of the River Orb. The Mediterranean is a short drive away, offering superb beaches and a full range of watersports.

For lovers of history, art and culture, the Languedoc Roussillon region offers castles, Abbayes, historic walks and trails. And for the Gastronome, vineyards of international reknown and a cuisine that will revitalize even the most jaded palate.

Fast being discovered by holiday makers, the Languedoc offers holidays of tremendous diversity: sandy beaches, wooded mountains, ancient market towns and thriving fishing villages. With fiestas taking place seemingly every other day, the vibrancy of Languedoc life is tempered only by devotion to an unhurried pace of life that is quintessentially South of France.

There are many excursions and activities within easy shooting distance of Le Couvent. Visit not one but two UN World Heritage sites in one day - the walled City of Carcassonne and the Canal Du Midi.

While away a day visiting extraordinary places redolent with Cathar history, such as the castles of Quéribus, Peyrepertuse and Montségur.

Shop in the markets of the Renaissance town of Pézenas, where Molière wrote many of his plays. Sample world-class seafood and shellfish in the fishing villages of Bages, Bouzigues, Mèze and Marseillan and Sète, Rennes-le-Château, the Pont du Gard, the Cistercian abbeys of Fontfroide and Lagrasse, the wine estates, the oyster beds, the towns of Montpellier, Narbonne, Béziers and Nîmes. Or venture further afield to Uzès and Minerve, the list is endless...

Getting There

Getting to Le Couvent is easy. Close to Béziers and Montpellier, the village of Hérépian is situated just inside the Regional Park of the High Languedoc, between Lamalou-les-Bains and Bédarieux. It is served by airports at Béziers, Montpellier, Carcassonne and Perpignan, each with good international connections. By road, Hérépian is a short distance from the A9 motorway (exit Junction 36 Béziers Ouest, and follow the D909 North, signposted Bédarieux, until you see the signs for Hérépian).
