  About our region

Our holiday house is in a village called Capestang, which Capestangis close to the Pyrenees, the Masif Central and just 25 minutes from the Mediterranean Sea.

The area is full of antiquity and items of historical interest, dating back to 3000 BC. This village has been in existence for at least a thousand years.

It is a centre of the Languedoc viticulture region, where the local wines have become exceptionally good over the last few years.

There are facilities for walking, lazing on the beach, swimming and other water sports, and the area is also very good for cycling and walking.

Le Canal du Midi crosses the northern part of the village and is about 500 metres from the house.

Capestang has approximately 3000 inhabitants and is what we could call a 'French working village.' At the same time, it has a great deal of character and the locals are very friendly. It has a calm and peaceful atmosphere and is an ideal place to wind down. It has remained unspoilt by tourism, which its popularity has attracted. The local wine producing industry is very prevalent, which provides an excellent opportunity to sample the local produce. A supermarket is situated at the eastern end of the village.

The climate is Mediterranean, with summer temperatures which can reach as high as 35° to 40°C, which is 95° to 104°F. The yearly rainfall comes in shorter and heavier bursts than in England, which results in much more sunshine - the region as a whole has over 300 days of sunshine a year. In winter there can be some night frosts although it rarely snows.

The mild temperatures make this area worth considering for a visit at other times than during the summer holidays, especially as cheap flights are often available at off peak seasons. The property is available for long term winter lets at reduced rates - please contact us for details.

Capestang makes an excellent base for touring the region of Languedoc and further afield.
