We feel very lucky to be living in this part of France and after many years of restoring our home, we have opened it up to a small number of paying guests. I am English and Michel is French and he is also a great cook.

This area is wonderful for those who love to walk, cycle, paint, canoe, swim, shop or partake of the local culinary delights. Hill villages, châteaux and vineyards cover the landscape. We are an hour from the Camargue, the Ardeche and the Cevennes. The medieval walled city of Avignon is nearby as are Orange, Nîmes and Arles with their remarkably preserved remains. Ten minutes away is the beautiful city of Uzès, an ancient Duchy, much of which was built in the 15th and 16th century or earlier. With its teeming sidewalk cafés, restaurants and shops, it hosts a Saturday market that must be amongst the most colourful and picturesque in Europe.

Discover les Gorges du Gardon. Why not take a canoe from Russan to the Pont du Gard, 30km of beautiful wilderness accessible by canoe or kayak. You can rent your own canoe and discover without any danger the marvellous river. The hire includes all organisation and provdes the necessary floating jackets and waterproof containers for your lunch. When you have organised your journey, you will be met by a transfer bus to take you back to your starting point.

Our home "Les Marroniers" is situated in a small village called La Bruguière. It is a charming place to walk in and around just enjoying the views and practising your French with the locals playing pétanque in the shaded area outside the house.

About our property

Les Marroniers is a 19th century (1812) Maison de Maitre (Master's House), built on three levels with an enclosed forecourt, shaded by chestnut trees, where we often dine or just sit and relax. It has been our home since 1989, and after ten years of restoring it, we decided to open it up to a small number of paying guests. We thought about it a lot. We were wondering how we would feel with strangers in our home. Then we realised that Les Marroniers has alwasy been full of visitors. The difference was that they were family and friends. So, we decided to think of our guests as friends coming to spend some time with us. This has worked very well, both for us and for our guests. More importantly,, many of our guests have become our friends. The real sign of happy visitors is that they come back....and they do!

We have only been taking paying guests since Easter 98. We have so far received:

Three Keys (stars) rating from the Conseil General de Gard Tourisme.

Four Suns (stars) rating from the Association Française B&B France.

Three Stars rating from the Fleurs de Soleil, Association des Maisons D'Amis en France.

Offering a haven away from large hotels, we open our doors to only eight people (plus an occasional house guest or two).

There are four double rooms, each of which is decorated differently in French country style. All have tea and coffee making facilities, TV, video, CD and radio and private bath or shower and WC, as well as high quality beds and linen. One room has satellite TV and we have a good library of English language movies.

Bedroom 1 has a double bed and shower and tea and coffee making facilities.

Bedroom 2 has twin beds, a radio and a double shower.

Bedroom 1Bedroom 2

Bedroom 3 has twin beds, separate bath and shower and satellite TV.

Bedroom 4 has a double bed, radio, shower and direct access to the heated swimming pool.

Bedroom 3Bedroom 4

The house has central heating, so it's very comfortable throughout the year. The weather for the grape harvest in autumn is usually beautiful. The winters are frequently sunny and mild for the truffle fairs and the spring is fresh and green for the fruit blossoms. These are all great days for the leisurely lunch and maybe an extra glass or two of the local wine.

Continental breakfast is served by the pool or under the chestnuts in the forecourt, a gentle way to clear your head whilst planning the day's activities. Maybe you'll want to relax by the pool or take off on a picnic on the banks of the many nearby rivers or perhaps visit some of the places of historic or cultural interest. If after a long day out you wish for an evening in, we can provide a meal. Just let us Dining Roomknow early in the morning.

Evening meals are four courses with wine, apéritif and coffee. Depending on the weather you can either eat outside in the shade of the marroniers, or alternatively in the spacious guests' dining area.

Outside, there is a good sized swimming pool set in a lawn surrounded by flowering shrubs and plants. Ample garden furniture provides poolside seating under the old fig tree.
