About
our region
To the north of Argens Minervois
is the Parc Naturel Regional du Haut Languedoc, the Pic
de Nore rising to 1,210m, edged by the Montagne Noires in
the west.
There is plenty to do in the Aude - golf (the Golf du
Carcassonne offers an 18 hole undulating course),
fishing, swimming, cycling, sailing and hiking.
The Aude is known as Cathar country, being the centre of
the 10th century Christian heretics before being
suppressed by the Roman Catholic church. There are many
abbeys and Cathar castles to explore.
The medieval City of Carcasonne is an UNESCO World
Heritage Site. There are many restaurants and gift shops
within its walls. In July the Festival de la Cite with
dance, theatre and music and a fireworks display on
Bastille Day takes place and during the first two weeks
of August the medieval pageant of Les Medievales takes
place.
At Lezignan Corbieres an introduction to local wines is
provided at the Musee de la Vigne et du Vin.
Narbonne was capital of Rome's first colony in Gaul. The
Horreum, an underground grain store divided into small
rooms and the remains of the first Roman road, Via
Domitia, can be seen.
The Aude boasts 50km of coastline. Narbonne Plage is a
seaside resort with plenty of seaside amusements and a
wide sandy beach.
Gruissan Plage, just south of
Narbonne, was the setting for the film 'Betty Blue'. The
island of Saint-Lucie, a 250 hectare wooded area which is
protected, is one of the most beautiful sites on the Med.
Further south towards the Spanish border there are many
other resorts and quaint fishing villages.
South of Lezignan Corbieres is Quillan, a shoe making
centre and Esperaza just north of Quillan where a nest of
dinosaur's eggs is on display with other bits and pieces
at 'Dinosauria'. At Rennes-les-Bains the hot spa waters
are rich in sulphur, calcium and chlorine for the
treament of rheumatism.
On the Canal du Midi at nearby Le Somail there is an ice
house, a hat museum and a village shop on a barge.
Argens-Minervois itself was once a fortified village with
a ruined castle.
Whatever your interests, there is something to do for
everyone in the Aude.
