Self catering holidays near Carcassonne in the Languedoc for up to 30 people

A collection of 5 beautifully restored timber and stone houses set in a tranquil garden with swimming pool in the centre of a charming “village circulade” in the South of France.

Situated in the heart of Cathar country,  Montclar is ideally situated to explore the mysteries and myths of the Da Vinci Code. Rennes le Chateau, where the priest Sauniere allegedly found secret manuscripts and built his church, is just down the road. The romantic ruins of Cathar castles, perched high on mountaintops evoke tales of Templar knights, fair maidens and ancient legends. The medieval walled city of Carcassonne on an evening is unforgettable.

When you’ve had enough of history, you could try whitewater rafting or explore the magnificent unspoilt countryside on foot, bike or on horseback. You could also head for the Pyrenees, which can be seen from the village. The beach and Mediterranean is also just an hour away. Beautiful Barcelona is three hours away.

Montclar is in the wineproducing area of the Malepere  and you could while away many a pleasant hour sampling the local produce. The foodmarket, which is held in a different village every day, is a good place to buy wonderful home produced fare and to take in the sights and sounds from one of the cafes in the square.

After all this you could return to your newly furnished house, lounge around the pool, and  enjoy a barbeque in your own garden. Whatever your preference, we think you will have a wonderful holiday in Montclar.

If you wish, you can even combine your holiday with brushing up your French! We can arrange private lessons from a native French speaking professional teacher.

To make things even better, the area is also easily accessible by road and air, with Carcassonne Airport (serviced by Ryanair) only 15 minutes away and Toulouse Airport (British Airways, Easyjet and Flybe) an hour's drive. Montpellier and Perpignan are also within easy driving distance.

Each house has been sympathetically restored to retain much of its original character and is situated in the middle of the charming village on a quiet no-through road near the medieval church.

Each house is newly furnished in an elegant modern style and equipped to a high standard, including new kitchens, bathrooms and appliances (your own washing machine, dishwasher, DVD player (you need to bring your DVD's!), satellite TV). Every house has its own private terrace with BBQ and outdoor furniture.

Montsegur (Sleeps 6)

This spacious house has exposed stonework and beamed ceilings and is used by the owner out of season.

There is one double bedroom, 2 bedrooms with 2 single beds each. On the ground floor there is a kitchen and adjacent dining room. The bathroom has a WC, bath with shower and basin.

As well a small terrace outside the kitchen, there is also a private courtyard with BBQ, and adjoining summer kitchen with fridge, cutlery and crockery.There are electric heaters as well as two wood burning stoves for heating in Winter. There is direct access to the swimming pool and garden area through french windows.

Minerve (Sleeps 5/6)

Originally part of a Maison de Maitre, the living and kitchen space is situated on the ground floor.

The living area, with its high ceiling, fireplace and wood burning stove leads onto the patio, which in turn leads on to the pool and garden.

There is a large bedroom with 2 single beds on the ground floor, 1 double on middle floor and a charming double room in the attic. The bathroom has a WC, bath with shower, bidet and basin.

There are electric heaters throughout.

Lastours (Sleeps 6)

On the middle level, the living and kitchen space leads onto the patio, which opens up onto the garden and pool.

The bathroom has a bath with shower, bidet and basin. Converted from the original stable, there is a large double bedroom with en-suite shower on the ground floor and two twin bedrooms in the beamed attic.T

There are electric heaters throughout the house.

Arques (Sleeps 4)

This smaller house still retains much of the character of the original farmhouse with beamed ceilings and modern kitchen.

The bathroom has a WC, bath with shower and basin and there is a private terrace and barbecue area in the garden opposite.

There are electric heaters throughtout.

Termes (Sleeps 6/8)

The outstanding feature of this house with its stonework and exposed beams is the roof terrace which gives panoramic views over the village, surrounding countryside and mountains.

The kitchen and living area are on the ground floor and adjacent to the "grenier" (previously the goat and sheep house); on the middle floor are one double room and two twin bedded bedrooms.

The bathroom has a WC, bath, bidet, shower and basin and there is also a cloakroom with basin and WC on the ground floor.

An attic bedroom with double/single bed is adjacent to the magnificent roof terrace with its views of the surrounding countryside.

There are electric heaters throughout.

Off Peak arrival and departure dates may be flexible, and weekend and short breaks are available. Pool open May 1 - end September. Extended period by request.

Your booking will be confirmed when your deposit of 30% of the total fee has been received. The balance is payable not later than 8 weeks prior to arrival, together with a security bond against damages and breakages of £200. This will be refunded to you not later than 2 weeks after departure.

About our region

Domaine Montclar is a group of five newly restored houses at the top of a hilltop village and near to the church. Montclar is a secluded medieval village just 11 miles from the spectacular fortified city of Carcassonne in the Languedoc Roussillon, with panoramic views over winegrowing valleys and mountains.

Although there are daily deliveries of bread, meat and vegetables, the surrounding villages and markets sell a wide selection of delicious local foods and drinks including the local "Blanquette".

The stunningly beautiful countryside around Montclar is ideal for walking, whether just a stroll or more serious hiking and cycling.

Nearby you can play golf and tennis, go canoeing or whitewater rafting, or indulge in gastronomic pleasures. There are numerous cellars to visit and as Montclar is on the wineroute, sample the local wines or visit the hot springs at Alet which date from Roman times.

The area is rich in Cathar history and the spectacular fortified city of Carcassonnne should not be missed. Within an hour's drive you can go skiing or snowboarding in the Pyrenees and reach the Mediterranean beaches.
