This beautiful village house represents an superior example of a "Maison de Vigneron" that was carefully and beautifully restored preserving much of its original elegance and splender while at the same time adding modern conveniences such as multiple bathrooms, a roof terrace, and professional kitchen space. The house has original Languedoc floor tiles, four fireplaces with marble mantles, and original plaster ceiling roses. In January, we just completed a comprehensive refurnishing and interior decoration of the house. All appliances and furniture are in new condition. The house offers peace and tranquility in the heart of the Minervois. Enjoy its charm and beauty, whilst enjoying the comforts of its modern faculties.

There are 3 floors where our guests will enjoy both private and common spaces for their comfort and relaxation. As you move through the house you are absorbed in its distinctive french ambiance.

Entering the house, you are greeted by an entry area that opens on to a long central hall. This hall leads directly to a private courtyard where you can enjoy a cool and refreshing meal or beverage on a warm summer day. On this floor there is a professional outfitted kitchen completely equipped with tools for preparing that perfect meal. The kitchen is outfitted with a professional cooking stove, dishwasher, microwave, and other small appliances. There is a larder (pantry) where the refrigerator and clothes washing machine are located. There is also an electric clothes dryer, air drying rack, clothes iron, and ironing board available.

Also on this floor, there is the lounge with stereo sound system, colour television with satellite TV and DVD. The lounge is decorated in a traditional french style that includes a mix of antique and modern furnishings. As you leave the lounge and continue toward the rear of the house you will come to a separate dining room that can seat up to 8 comfortably. Opposite the dining room are the stairs to the upper floors.

On the second floor (1st in Europe) there are 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The first bedroom at the end of the hall is the wine room. It has a double bed for two people. This bedroom also has its own fireplace. Adjacent to this bedroom is the main bathroom with bathtub and shower. Across the hall is the lilac room. The lilac bedroom is decorated in a lilac motif with black iron bed. There is also a black marble fireplace and traditional red floor tiles. This bedroom has a queen bed for 2 persons and en suite bathroom with shower

On the third floor (2nd Europe), you find a third bedroom, bathroom with shower, upstairs lounge, sun room and roof top terrace. Bedroom 3 is the rustic room furnished with a double bed. The upstairs lounge is one of our favorite rooms. It is the room for artists. As you sit in the chairs you can view out across the roof tops of the village and see the Montagne Noire (Black Mountains). It is a great room to read, paint, write, or just sit and contemplate quietly.

About our region

Trausse is an ancient village with vestiges dating back to ancient Roman civilization still present today. Trausse was formerly known as 'Traussan' signifying its Roman origins. The exact date of origin is unknown, however the Chapelle St Roch is of 8th Century Roman origin. At about the same time the Abbey at Caunes Minervois was constructed. The Abbey monks belonged to the Benedictine order.

The fortifications that remain today are of medieval origin. In 1189, the Tour Trencavel is mentioned as a possession of the Abbey at Caunes Minervois and owned by the Trencavel viscount. During the Albigenzian crusade the monks of Caunes remained loyal to the roman catholic church. Trausse probably faired well during this crusade because of its ties to the Abbey. In the 15th century Religous Wars between the protestants and catholics, the Duke of Joyeuse took control of Trausse. The Duke ordered the renovations of the Traussan fortifications and the tour in 1573 as a means to protect the newly acquired domain. In 1585 Traussen was taken from the Duke of Joyeuse by Henry de Montmorency, the duke of Damville and constable of Languedoc who supported King Henry the 4th of France.

Today when you visit Trausse you can observe remnants of the old fortification that remain intact. The Tour Trencavale, the rampart and an ancient gate. There is also the romanesque church dating from the 12th and 13th centuries.

In the 18th Century, wine became "king" of the Minervois and Trausse vineyards made an important contribution to the growing wine industry. It was at this time that the house that became Two place de la Liberté was built on a small plaza in Trausse, adjacent to the old gate and in sight of Trencavel tour.

Wine continues to be an important part of Trausse culture today and five fine domaines and caves call Trausse home. We are proud to feature the wines of Trausse winemakers at Two place de la Liberté. Make sure that you visit several. Several are within easy walking distance from the house.

Trausse is a quiet french village with only 446 inhabitants. The village is very french and active. There is a small grocery that sells bread, wine and other products only a few doors away from the house. A few meters away a new coiffer (hair salon) has opened. There are vans that come daily to the village with bread, meats, and other items. Just a few kilometers away in Caunes Minervois, Peyraic Minervois and Rieux Minervois, where there are banks, restaurants, bars, markets and other commercial facilities. Carcassonne is only 20 minutes away and has large supermarkets and other commercial facilities.

There is an enormous variety of activities to pursue and sights to see for the whole family, including wine tasting at the numerous winemakers in the area. Visit one or more of the many fascinating markets? There is a least one every day of the week in high season - including the Halles du Marche in Narbonne and on the Place Carnot in Carcassonne. Also don't forget the market in Olonzac and other local villages.

Take a boat ride, walk, or bicycle ride on the Canal du Midi. The canal is only 3 kms away and provides many beautiful walks and cycle rides as well as the opportunity for lazy days spent cruising in the dappled shade on one of the many boats for hire!

There are also many historical places of interest to visit as we are in the heart of Cathar country and both Carcassonne and Narbonne are only half an hour away or less. Also visit the Abbey at Caunes Minervois which is the village right next door.

The area offers extensive sporting opportunities and we are 10 minutes from Lac de Jouarres where guests can windsurf, sail and fish as well as swim from the lake beach which has a lifeguard in high season. There are wonderful flat, sandy Mediterranean beaches or small private coves only 40 minutes away and make an ideal day out. Golf can be arranged at the pretty course in Carcassonne where visiting players are always welcome. Take in a rugby match. Remember that this year the world Rugby Championship are to be held in France during September and October.

Of course you could just relax sitting in a cafe while you drink some wine or try a special local dish.

Remember there is more than enough things to pursue to keep yourself busy during your entire holiday period. Just Enjoy
