About our region

Carcassonne cité from a far looks like a fairy tale castle, gleaming in the sunlight and illuminated at night it is truly breath taking. Built originally by the Gauls, Romans, Visigoths, Morrs and Franks it was later used as one of the major strongholds for the Cathars. But in 1659, when Rousillon was annexed to France, Carcassonne Cité started to fall into disrepair, by the 18th century the Cité was little more than a slum. In 1850, the Cité was saved by the intervention of Viollet-le-Duc, who felt passionate about the Cité and persuaded the Commission of Historical Monuments to undertake the restoration work in 1844. The restoration was finally completed in 1910.

On 14th July at 10.30 p.m the Cité hosts a spectacular fireworks display. People come from all over the world to experience this fantastic event. Throughout July, the Festival at the Cité brings Music, Opera, Dance and Theatre to town.

Once you are here you will discover the term Le Pays Cathar (the cathar land) which was once home to the Cathars, a religious group who were eventually exterminated by the Albigensians.

Catherism spread from the Balkans to Toulouse , Albi and Carcassonne during the 11th to 13th centuries, however in 1208, Pope Innocent III preached a crusade against the Cathars and joined forces with the Albigenses in a missions to wipe them out.

After long sieges, the major Cathar centres at Béziers, Carcassonne , the village of Minerve and the dramatically sited fortresses of Montségur, Quéribus and Peyrepertuse were taken and hundreds of Cathars were slaughtered and burnt.

It is still possible to visit all of the wonderful fortresses once inhabited by the Cathars, which are set in breathtaking locations.

Cassoulet - is the most famous dish of the region, traditionally it's a rich stew of haricot beans, sausage, pork, duck, mutton and preserved goose.

Canal du Midi - enjoy one of the pleasant boat trips along the beautiful canal which leads from Carcassonne (near the train station) in the direction of Castelnaudary. We would not recommend this in really hot weather.

Wine tasting - we are situated in the carbardes wine region, where the climate allows the culture of two vintages - Atlantic (Merlot and Cabernet) and Mediterranean (Syrah and Grenache) which are rich and harmonious wines. Other local winesare Carcassonne , Malpere, Minervois, Limoux, Fitou, Corbieres, we are in close proximatey to all these vineyards. One of our personal favourites is the "Chateau Auzias" only a 10 minutes drive from here, it is open every day and the owner is very welcoming. We have spent many an afternoon there sampling the wine with friends and family.

This region has plenty to offer children of all age groups, from swimming and playing in the long Med beaches to a huge array of children's activities.

Mountain biking holidays- does the thought of discovering some of the best trails Southern France (as used by the world championships) sound appealing?
You can start your journey here where you will immediately be struck by the beautiful views of the Pyrenees and the Mountain Noire. You can find over 400km marked trails on our door step. Colin co-owner of the Maison des pins is an ex-team mountain biker captain who would be more than happy too assist in
any route planning.

We are in an ideal location for sporting holidays. If it's an adrenaline holiday your interested in then you can try white water rafting, and various other white nuckle rides near us. If you're looking for something a bit less active then there are plenty of other things on offer such as golf, fishing, walking, hiking, pony trekking, canoeing, swimming, rock climbing, sailing, the list is endless.
