About
our gîte Situated in the Languedoc is the department of Aude where the Corbière hills stretch between Perpignan in the south, Carcassonne in the north and Narbonne and the Mediterranean to the east. We are Diane and David Davey and we live in the tiny hilltop village of St Martin des Puits; at the very heart of the Haute Corbières. Here we own two holiday gites; La Garrigue for four guests and La Rocheuse for two. Click Here to see the details for La Rocheuse Both gites are available all year round, so if mid-summer is too hot for you, why not try spring when the aroma of the new plants is breathtaking, or autumn when the days are warm and the hill walking perfect, or maybe a longer winter break, when the weather can be superb. St Martin des Puits is a very small village set in the heart of the Haute Corbieres, an area not only renowned for its wine but also for its walking. This superb walking is from your front door, close by is the GR 36 the famous long distance walk. There are an abundance of shorter way marked walks. Just ask Diane if you would like further information. By the way, shes always happy to accompany you if you feel the need for a guide. La
Garrigue is a
detached single story gite. It has a garden to the front and side and its own private
parking. The sun rises at the back and sets in the front,
so there is The sitting room has a settee and two arm chairs, a selection of books, games and UK satellite TV, Video, DVD and Hifi. Prices include a grocery starter pack and all linen except beach towels. Booking. About our region This is an area steeped in history and was the home of the Cathars. You will find stunning castles perched on limestone crags, medieval towns and villages where you can taste the result of 2000 years of wine production. There is superb walking and
mountain biking, beautiful rivers and gorges and the
Canal du Midi. Nearby, you will find the sun drenched,
golden Mediterranean beaches, with many opportunities to
swim, sail and windsurf. Lagrasse 15 minutes drive from St Martin des Puits is the medieval town of Lagrasse, with its ancient Abbey, one of the outposts of the Carolingian civilization (Frankish Catalonia). The Abbey is well worth a visit as is the town with its good selection of shops. In the summer the river is dammed and provides a safe swimming area for children and adults. Carcassonne Understandably The Cité is a World Heritage Site. Its history goes back some 1700 years. The restorations early last century, although somewhat Disneyesque, enable us today to enjoy the largest fortress in Europe. There are ample restaurants for lunch and an abundance of souvenir shops. This is a day out that we are sure you will enjoy. The Mediterranean The best of the Mediterranean beaches are no more than an hour away, and what a choice. From the relaxing Le Franqui and charming Collioure in the south, to the bustle of Gruissan and Narbonne Plage to the North. There is something for everyone from swimming to kite-boarding, or you could just take a book and try sunbathing. After all youre here to relax. Rennes-Le-Chateau Father Béranger Sauniére and his sudden wealth in 1891 has put Rennes le Château well and truly on the tourist map. The story has spawned several books, most famously, Holy Blood and Holy Grail which in turn formed the basis for The De Vinci Code While in the area visit the Musée des Dinosaurs at Espéraza, then on to Alet les-Bains and back via Limoux. The Cathar Castles Close by are some of the most stunning of the Cathar Castles. Termes, one of the five sons of Carcassonne, is just 15 minutes drive. The other four, Aguilar, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens and Quéribus are all an easy drive through some spectacular scenery. While on the Cathar route be sure to drive through the Gorges de Galamus and visit the Hermitage de St-Antoine. The Canal Du Midi Another world
heritage site. This one stretching from Toulouse to the
Mediterranean, was built in the 17th century and although
no longer a commercial waterway, today it is home to a
thriving pleasure boat industry. Walk or cycle on the
many miles of tow path, shaded by Plane trees and stop
for lunch at a canal side restaurant. There are day boats
for hire at many of the canal centres. The Canal du Midi
is truly a magnificent example of waterway civil
engineering.
Norfolkline (Dover Dunkerque), Speedferries (Dover Boulogne) and Eurotunnel offer low cost channel crossings. The French Autoroutes are superb, we are 30 minutes from the A61. Allow about 12 hours minimum for your trip down. We would suggest that you have a night's stopover on the way. Whichever way you come avoid Paris at all costs.
