  About our apartment

Situated in the Languedoc is the department of Aude where the Corbière hills stretch between Perpignan in the south, Carcassonne in the north and Narbonne and the Mediterranean to the east.

We are Diane and David Davey and we live in the tiny hilltop village of St Martin des Puits; at the very heart of the Haute Corbières. Here we own two holiday gites; La Garrigue for four guests and La Rocheuse for two.

Click Here to see the details for La Garrigue

Both gites are available all year round, so if mid-summer is too hot for you, why not try spring when the aroma of the new plants is breathtaking, or autumn when the days are warm and the hill walking perfect, or maybe a longer winter break, when the weather can be superb.

La Rocheuse takes its name from the rock face upon which the house is built. Here and there the rocks rise from the floor where they have been skilfully incorporated into the décor. La Rocheuse is the ground floor of our ancient stone house.

“One of those rare finds”, La Rocheuse has been newly converted and offers comfortable accommodation for two. Wooden floors and tasteful decoration along with the many original paintings, and photographs give the apartment a warm and homely feel.

The spacious, eat-in kitchen is fully equipped with full size gas cooker, fridge freezer, automatic washing machine, kettle, toaster etc. There is a generous dining area with space and equipment for entertaining.

The sitting room enjoys superb views, there is a settee and two easy chairs plus a study corner with fold down desk. For entertainment there is a supply of books, videos ,satellite TV, and a DVD/CD player.

The pretty bedroom with its low ceilings and beams looks out onto the timber decked terrace and the hills beyond. UK electric socket.

The bathroom has a toilet, wash basin and a small bath with shower.

We are unable to supply cot linen

All the rooms have electric heating and full insulation ensuring that you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. All linen is supplied. If you require a cot or high chair please let us know when you book (there is no charge for this, but we cannot supply cot linen).

La Rocheuse is available all year and is perfect for two. There is a superb shaded terrace with views over the Orbieu Gorge, ideal for dining on those warm evenings in the spring, summer or autumn.

La Rocheuse is part of an old building, there are steps between all rooms, doorways are low and the bedroom ceiling is 1.78m with lower beams.

About our region

This is an area steeped in history and was the home of the Cathars. You will find stunning castles perched on limestone crags, medieval towns and villages where you can taste the result of 2000 years of wine production.

There is superb walking and mountain biking, beautiful rivers and gorges and the Canal du Midi. Nearby, you will find the sun drenched, golden Mediterranean beaches, with many opportunities to swim, sail and windsurf.

There really is so much to see and so much to do; but alternatively, should the mood take you just sit and relax in one of the many cafes or restaurants.

Lagrasse

15 minutes drive from St Martin des Puits is the medieval town of Lagrasse, with its ancient Abbey, one of the outposts of the Carolingian civilization (Frankish Catalonia). The Abbey is well worth a visit as is the town with its good selection of shops. In the summer the river is dammed and provides a safe swimming area for children and adults.

Carcassonne

Understandably “The Cité” is a World Heritage Site. Its history goes back some 1700 years. The restorations early last century, although somewhat Disneyesque, enable us today to enjoy the largest fortress in Europe. There are ample restaurants for lunch and an abundance of souvenir shops. This is a day out that we are sure you will enjoy.

The Mediterranean

The best of the Mediterranean beaches are no more than an hour away, and what a choice. From the relaxing “Le Franqui” and charming “Collioure” in the south, to the bustle of “Gruissan” and “Narbonne Plage” to the North. There is something for everyone from swimming to kite-boarding, or you could just take a book and try  sunbathing. After all you’re here to relax.

Rennes-Le-Chateau

Father Béranger Sauniére and his sudden wealth in 1891 has put Rennes le Château well and truly on the tourist map. The story has spawned several books, most famously, Holy Blood and Holy Grail which in turn formed the basis for “The De Vinci Code” While in the area visit the Musée des Dinosaurs at Espéraza, then on to Alet –les-Bains and back via Limoux.

The Cathar Castles

Close by are some of the most stunning of the Cathar Castles. Termes, one of the “five sons of Carcassonne”, is just 15 minutes drive. The other four, Aguilar, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens and Quéribus are all an easy drive through some spectacular scenery. While on the Cathar route be sure to drive through the Gorges de Galamus and visit the Hermitage de St-Antoine.

The Canal Du Midi

Another world heritage site. This one stretching from Toulouse to the Mediterranean, was built in the 17th century and although no longer a commercial waterway, today it is home to a thriving pleasure boat industry. Walk or cycle on the many miles of tow path, shaded by Plane trees and stop for lunch at a canal side restaurant. There are day boats for hire at many of the canal centres. The Canal du Midi is truly a magnificent example of waterway civil engineering.
