About our Region

The charming village of Montazels is part of the rich and fascinating history for which this region is renowned, being the birthplace of Bérenger Saunière, the priest at the centre of the Rennes de Château mystery, which heavily influenced the plot of the recent Dan Brown book and film 'The Da Vinci Code.'

The mystery is one of hidden treasure and secret codes. The topography of the area is also subject to much speculation. The existence of regular geometric patterns hidden in the landscape are said to show that the positioning of churches and monuments is far from random. To delve deeper just type Montazels into any search engine and surf away.

The centre of the village and Maison de Vigne are situated in the upper part of the village with spectacular views over the neighbouring village of Couiza and the surrounding countryside by day, and the twinkling lights down in the valley remind you of your elevated position by night.

The village square is home to three dolphins. The fountain on which they sit has the status of 'monument historiques,' giving all the nearby houses including Maison de Vigne, listed building status. There are very strict rules preventing any change to the appearance of the buildings, thereby preserving the look and feel of the village for generations to come.

Montazels has a rail connection to Carcassonne with SNCF connections to Toulouse and Paris. The train stop is a ten minute walk from the cottage, with restaurant and shops a further 5 minute walk over the river bridge in Couiza. The village is also home to La Cave des Haute d'Aldae, where local wines can be tasted and bought.

Languedoc

The Languedoc region has been likened to the Provence of 70 years ago - the British ideal of the South of France. This is a land of sandy beaches, mountain ranges, endless vineyards, wild garrigue where eagles soar and flamingoes paddle in the shallows of oyster beds.

The region has also come to the attention of UNESCO with 2 attractions on their list of World Heritage Sites.

The Canal du Midi cuts through the region on its way from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. The avenues of tall straight plane trees that line its route are an image that tends to stay with you after you've left. In 1996 the canal joined the Great Wall of China as a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, followed in 1997 by Carcassonne.

Carcassonne is a living medieval city complete with turrets and dungeons. The city can be very crowded in summer, but a visit out of season gives you more time to take in the atmosphere and appreciate the fantastic views across the city to the distant snow-topped Pyrenees.

The activities to pursue are endless in this region of France. Winter sports are catered for by the proximity of the Pyrenean mountain range. Montazels  nestles in the warm, temperate Aude valley, which means that snow doesn't usually settle here, so if you're planning  a winter visit you'll only need snow chains if you're going up into the mountains.

Skiing

The nearest ski resort, 27 miles away, is Camurac, with 16 downhill pistes and 14 km of cross-country ski tracks. Buses from Quillan leave twice a day during the skiing season. Slightly further afield are Puyvalador and Les Angles, and - an hours drive  Here you will find pistes suitable for beginners through to experts, in addition to off -piste routes for the more adventurous.

Getting there

By Air: At just 40 minutes drive Carcassonne is the closest airport to Montazels, with 2 Ryanair flights a day  from Stanstead. There are Hertz & Eurocar car hire offices at the airport plus a shuttle bus to the station for a train to Couiza/Montazels, (10 minutes walk to the house).  Easyjet fly from Gatwick to Toulouse which is 90 minutes drive from the house.

The other options are Stanstead to Perpignan (1 hours drive), or Gerona in Spain (2,5 hours drive) from  Luton, Bournmouth, Blackpool, Bristol, Newcastle, Liverpool, Stanstead, Dublin, Glasgow or East Midlands with either Easyjet or Ryanair.

Ferry/Drive: It takes roughly 12 hours to drive from Boulogne. We have found Speedferries to be the cheapest option with plenty of sailings  available and bookable via t'internet.

By Train: Let the train take the strain from Waterloo to Couiza/Montazels via Paris, Toulouse & Carcassonne by SNCF.
