  About our region

Our apartment is situated in the sunny Languedoc region of South West France on the Mediterranean coast. The region, rich in culture and history, was one of the first Roman colonies. This part of France has great beauty, with its mountains, the Pyrenees, vineyards and beautiful sandy beaches all along the coastline with miles of golden sands. Good wines and food are synonymous with this unique region, and the Cave de Gruissan is just over the road from our apartment and offers scintillating wines from the area at very reasonable prices. The charming town of Narbonne with the Canal du Midi running through it is approximately 12 km away from Gruissan. Narbonne with its narrow streets has excellent shopping and markets take place every Thursday and Sunday morning. There is a cathedral in the town square with shops and cafés around, really pleasant to sit and watch the world go by. There are very good rail and road connections from Narbonne to the major cities in France and Spain. If you enjoy sightseeing, as well as Narbonne, an hour's drive away is the town of Beziers and also the medieval town of Carcassonne with its historic castle and Gruissan Waterfrontold town.

Gruissan is very pretty, as well as the marina the typically French village of Gruissan is a few minutes' walk away from our apartment. Every Saturday morning there is a market in the village square.

The apartment is situated on the waterside of the beautiful marina at Gruissan. From the apartment and the large private roof terrace there are uninterrupted views of the marina, Pyrenees and the village of Gruissan with its old Breakfast on the roof terracecastle. For dining out there are many cafés and restaurants around the marina and in the village. As well as the beautiful sandy beaches Gruissan is ideal for cycing and bikes can be hired locally.

Bird watching is another activity that can take place here; flamingoes, marsh harrier and ibis can all be seen. There are some lovely interesting walks around the marina, village and the nearby mountain La Clape.

About our apartment (sleeps 2)

The accommodation is on two levels on 3rd & 4th floor with lift to apartment. There is a free private parking space available for our guests. I am sorry but no smokers or pets.

With its interesting location, this light, airy and tastefully decorated apartment with its large private roof terrace is on the waterside of the beauiful marina at Gruissan. As well as dining in the various restaurants around the marina you can enjoy a barbecue on the balcony watching the boats come and go.

The accommodation is on two levels. On the first level there is:

A well equipped gallery kitchen with hob, fridge, microwave, the dining area leading out to a large balcony for outside dining with a barbecue.

The bathroom is also on this level, with bath/shower and washing machine.

The open plan staircase leads to the second level. Here there is:

A large double bedroom which overlooks the terrace with the door leading out to the terrace where there are sun loungers.

The lounge area overlooks the marina, there is a music centre and satellite TV with the facility to play PAL videos.

"We had a super holiday in the apartment at Gruissan. It is so lovely and light and airy and so tastefully decorated. Easily the best apartment we have rented for our holiday and so well equipped. It is so relaxing to be able to sit on the balcony, or go upstairs by the window and just watch the boats coming and going and generally observe life round the marina.

The more we explored Gruissan and the surrounding area, the more we liked it. There was the chance to hire bikes and ride on the cycle path to Narbonne Plage and beyond, well away from the traffic (which we did); there was horse riding, which we intended to do but didn't get round to it, as we were too busy enjoying other things. The area is good for bird watching, we saw flamingoes which are common to the area, we watched a marsh harrier hunting over the lagoons, and we saw sacred ibis which I believe are not common to the area.

The beautiful beaches all along the coastline, miles of golden sand to be enjoyed. We found a lovely place to sit and watch the sun as it sets beside the ruined castle of Gruissan - just walk along the marina, past the footbridge under the road bridge and sit there on the wall where the rowing boats are moored - perfect!

If you enjoy sightseeing, we found Narbonne and Beziers paritcularly interesting, with the narrow streets and both with magnificent cathedrals. Carcassonne was about an hour and a half away (we took the scenic route through the miles of vineyards) and although we had been there before, we were still in awe as we approached the ramparts and towers.

We watched the boats on the Canal du Midi at several different points; Narbonne, Beziers and Carcassonne specially interesting to see the holidaymakers manoevering their boats through the locks.

As we left on Saturday morning, we took a final visit to the market in the town square of Gruissan. The spice stall and the rotisserie with the chickens cooking, the fruit, vegetables and cheeses gave off an aroma that made the taste buds jump to attention. It was lovely to just stand and take stock in this little crowded, bustling market.

This is my final lasting image of Gruissan. We will return, sometime."

"Had a wonderful week in Gruissan - excellent apartment (especially upstairs) with superb views. We ate out every night and didn't use the cooker or BBQ, went to the beach every day and spent hours roaming around the harbour. Have taken photographs to give to friends at work.

"We are just writing to let you know how much we enjoyed our holiday at Gruissan. Your apartment was very well decorated and comfortable, with easy access to all amenities. We spent a lot of time up on the roof terrace with a bottle of wine just watching the boats coming in and out of the harbour. We have been going to France for the last 15 years and this apartment has been the best accommodation that we have had.

There are other comments, these are not to hand but in the visitors' book left in the apartment.
