south west France provides a multitude of activities and
places to visit. There are the historic towns We are sure that if you know France then you will certainly know, or have heard of Carcassonne. It is a town of about 45,000 inhabitants in the Region of Languedoc Roussillon, on the River Aude and Canal du Midi. It lies at the heart of the Toulouse-Montpellier-Barcelone triangle, at the crossroads of two major traffic roads dating back to the most ancient times, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, from the Cévennes to the Pyrénées mountain range where the Aude has its source. Carcassonne blooms in the plains of the lower valley, inviting you to walk in and out of its streets. Discover its history, its local cuisine, its wines, or simply enjoy the scenery. From the Bastide-Saint-Louis to the medieval walled city, Carcassonne offers a wealth of monuments to visit and discover! You can take a leisurely stroll along the streets and be charmed by the buildings and people you'll meet along the way, or you can be accompanied by the interpretive guides from the Tourist Office, who are intent on restoring the memory of their city. The Suburb Trivalle is the only pathway leading from the Bastide-Saint-Louis to the city. It is a winding road, carved in stone improved by man, with a history of more than 2000 years. Since it was constructed, this artery has seen the changing of populations; a haven where Visigoths, Romans, Saracens, Italians, Spaniards and Spanish gypsies have crossed paths. Its most beautiful houses date from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, such as the Hotel Pelletier and the Maison Montmorrency. Behind each building, nestling in the heart of courtyards and gardens, are eighteenth century charterhouses. A popular quarter, artistic and charming, always ready to meet amongst friends to finish with the song, "A quela Trivalla...." For those who
like the sun and sea, there are many resorts near
Narbonne about an hour's drive away. There you can also
enjoy fish and shellfish meals at very reasonable prices. The house is just 15 minutes from Carcassonne (Salvaza) airport, with flights by Ryanair from London Stansted, Dublin, Shannon, Liverpool & East Midlands & Brussels. Car Hire is available at all the airports. From Toulouse, Carcassonne is 45 minutes by car or by train, with daily flights by Easyjet, Flybe, BMIbaby, Air France and British Airways. Car Hire is available at all the airports. By car, the quickest route to Carcassonne is via the autoroute A1/Paris/A10/A71 via Orleans, Limoges, Cahors and Toulouse.
