Holiday Gites in Lagrasse, two riverside gites

Two Luxury Gites in the pretty village of Lagrasse in the heart of the Corbieres

River swimming on the doorstep with private access

We have two luxury gites, providing a peaceful year round base to enjoy Lagrasse and explore the Corbières. You can swim in the river behind the house (private access through the cellar), sunbathe on the beach and barbecue on the terrace, where there is a table and chairs.

Both apartments overlook the river, and have their own front doors and share an entrance hall with a grand stairwell which in the Middle Ages would have been a street dividing two separate houses (hence the size of the property). We live in the first floor Market Place apartment, should you need help or advice during your stay.

There is a games room with a full size table tennis table, boules, books and games, and videos can be borrowed at no extra charge. Cots and a high chair are available on request, and we also offer a babysitting service.

Bed linen is provided but please bring your own swimming towels. There is an iron and an ironing board, and a hairdryer. Free parking is available two minutes' walk away, and you can park on the market place to load and unload bags.

Riverside Gite (sleeps 2/6)

Riverside Gite measures 300 square feet ( 100 square metres). This apartment is on the first floor and has wonderful views across the river to cypress trees and umbrella pines on the rocky hillside. The timbered 17th century ceilings and a mix of antique and modern furniture give this apartment a period feel.

The kitchen/living room (16' x 20'), is well equipped with dishwasher, microwave, toaster and coffee maker, and has a dining table to seat six. There are two sofas (one is a comfortable sofa bed), a TV, video and a radio/CD player.

The main bedroom (10' x 18') has a kingsize bed, large wardrobe and comfortable chairs.

Bedroom 2 (13' x 19') has a kingsize double bed, an extra large iron single bed and a single Futon bed/chair.

The large bathroom has a walk in tiled shower and a separate bath. There is a second lavatory on the landing outside the apartment where there is also a washing machine. There is central heating for winter breaks.

Balcony Gite (sleeps 2/6)

This apartment, measuring 345 square feet ( 115 square metres), has French windows opening onto the balcony with great views over the river.

The well equipped kitchen has a 5 ring gaz hob and extractor fan, electric oven, dishwasher, microwave, four slice toaster and cafetière. It is cool and airy with a dining table to seat 6-8.

The sitting room has two sofas (one of which is a sofa bed), TV/video, radio/CD player and central heating for winter breaks.

The main bedroom has a kingsize bed and French windows opening onto the balcony.There is an en-suite bathroom with a tiled walk in shower, bath and washing machine.

The large 2nd bedroom has one double bed and one single bed, with an en-suite shower and toilet.

About our region

Lagrasse is a lively medieval village and designated as one of the prettiest in France. The vineyards and olive groves in the valley and the surrounding wild hills offer superb walking. Artists have been attracted here from far and wide. Once here, there is no need for a car for there are four restaurants, a bakery which has delicious cakes, two grocers (one delicatessen), post ofice, cash dispenser, doctors, chemists, garage and many wine producers. There are also many art galleries, potters and craftsmen.

July and August host festivals and free activities such as guided walks and tennis lessons. There is a football pitch, tennis court and boules pitch.

Bird life is good from autumn through to spring with nightingales, kingfishers and birds of prey. In February the almond blossom appears, followed shortly afterwards by remarkable spring flowers.

Walkers will enjoy the waymarked trails and scents of the 'garrigue,' which is characterised by Mediterranean pine, lavender, rosemary and thyme.

Carcassonne is 30 minutes away and Perpignan 1 hour. Montpellier and Toulouse and the Spanish border are 75 minutes away.

Some of the numerous Cathar castles are within cycling distance, and bike hire is possible. The Mediterrranean beaches are an easy 40 minute drive, and there is also terrific windsurfing on inland lagoons.

We can organise transfers from airports, bike hire, including itineraries, day trips to Cathar castles, wine tasting tours, and courses in mosaics and life drawing.

Getting there

Ryanair operate cheap flights from the UK to Carcassonne (30 minutes) and also to Perpignan (45 minutes)and Montpellier (approximately 1¼ hours). Toulouse airport is only 1¼ hours away and many major airlines fly there. Car hire is available at all these airports.
