About
our region
Situated
about halfway between Perpignan and Montpellier, St.
Pierre la Mer and its neighbouring resort of Narbonne
Plage are ideal spots for a
family holiday. The beaches at both St Pierre la Mer
& Narbonne Plage are clean, well tended and
supervised during the summer season. There are beach
showers, the sand stretches for miles and the sea is
gently shelving for safe bathing. The air and sea
temperatures are announced daily, and there is a variety
of beach activities organised during the high season,
such as beach volleyball and soccer.
You
can have sailing or diving lessons at Narbonne Plage,
where there are classes for children, and also tennis
lessons, with mini tennis for 5 to 7 year olds. Boat
trips along the coast and windsurfing are also popular.
There are very few hotels in either St Pierre la Mer or Narbonne Plage, as most accommodation is
in privately rented apartments or houses. Shopping is
close at hand, with one small supermarket being within
five minutes of the apartment. St Pierre la Mer and
Narbonne Plage both have a post office and a bank.
During the high season, the beach area becomes a centre
for festivals, concerts and firework displays. There are
well stocked and helpful tourist information centres in
both resorts, where you can
obtain up to the minute information about the summer
events and festivities.
A few minutes' walk from the apartment takes you past
shops and restaurants, and on to the marina at St Pierre.
The area is natural and has been deliberately kept
unspoiled.
There
are a number of restaurants to choose from, both in St
Pierre la Mer and Narbonne Plage, ranging from pizzerias
to gourmet food, and in high season it is always
advisable to book a table.
The Gouffre de l'Oeil Doux,
about 2 km out of St Pierre la Mer, is one of nature's
wonders. An almost perfectly round lake at the botton of
a limestone gorge. If you enjoy walking, you will be
delighted with the garrigue which surrounds you as you
make your way to the Gouffre. The garrigue is the name
for the natural countryside in this region - a mixture of
rocky outcrops, holly oaks, wild honeysuckle and roses,
orchids, rosemary and thyme, as well as many species of
birds and butterflies. This protected area extends to 466
hectares. If you come out of season, particularly in May,
the sights, sounds and scents of the garrigue are quite
enchanting.
Horse riding is available at the nearby Equestrian
centre, and there is a small farm nearby.
The countryside around St Pierre la Mer and
Narbonne Plage is a patchwork of limstone cliffs,
garrigue and vineyards. The area is famous for its wine
production, and many vineyards offer wine tasting, and
the opportunity to buy wine either en vrac (in your own
container), by the bottle or the case. One of the closest
of the wine producers is Château de l'Hospitalet, with
many hectares of immaculately tended vineyards, walking
tours and a complex of craft shops where local artisans
sell their produce.
The
city of Narbonne is approximately 12 km from St Pierre La Mer & Narbonne Plage. It is
a pretty town, with the Canal de la Robine at its centre,
ideal for hiring boats or simply strolling along its
banks. Narbonne has all the amenities one would expect,
including shops, banks, restaurants, pavement cafés and
bars. In the old quarter is the Cathedrale St Juste,
dating back to 1272, and the Palaise des Archevêques, in
the heart of the old town and in the shadow of the
cathedral. Narbonne also has an art gallery, an
archaelogical museum, a theatre, and the Roman
subterranean walkways, visible evidence of its past.
No visit to Narbonne would be complete without a stroll
round the huge market, where the selection of food is
vast, tempting and often intriguing (particularly the
fish!)
The
medieval city of Carcassonne, about an hour's drive away, must be one of the most photographed
cities in France. It was used as the set for the Sheriff
of Nottingham's castle in the film 'Robin Hood Prince of
Thieves.' Regular jousting events are held in the summer,
and with its fairytale turrets and narrow alleyways, is a
visit to remember. Bastille Day on 14th July is
celebrated with a massive firework display from the
castle.
The Cathar country around Carcassonne is dotted with
castles perched precariously on hilltops, and stalectite
and stalegmite caverns. One of the best of these is the
Gouffre de Cabrespine near Caunes Minervois, which has a
cavern deep enough to house the Eiffel Tower. For the
more adventurous, pot holing expeditions are possible -
stout shoes and stamina required, I believe they take
several hours to complete.
This beautiful area of France really has something to
offer everyone, and with 300 days of sunshine a year and
summer temperatures in the thirties, it is an ideal
location for a holiday.
Getting
there
St Pierre-la-Mer is easily
accessible by road and rail (there is a TGV station at
Narbonne). If flying, we would recommend Ryanair, who do
cheap flights to the airports at Carcassonne, Nimes,
Montpellier and Perpignan. Ryanair fly from London
Stansted, Luton, Dublin, Shannon, Liverpool & East
Midlands. Car Hire is available at all the airports.
All these destinations are within
an easy drive to St Pierre-la-Mer.
