Local activities include horse riding and tennis; a 27 hole golf course; bicycles for hire; 6km uncluttered beaches to stroll along; vineyards to visit; the 'gin run' to the Spanish border is a favourite with many visitors, who stock up on duty free goods of all sorts; art galleries & museums in the Phoenician port of Collioure and the mountainous village of Ceret.

Just half an hour into Spain the elegant city of Girona, built beside the River Onyar, offers fine dining and baroque architecture. And you can walk along the reconstructed medieval walls for sweeping views over the old city and countryside beyond

In the other direction drive north to Perpignan, situated on River Tet. 13th century capital of Mallorca. Main sites: Cathedral of St. John, begun 13thC; Le Palais des Rois - a medieval palace; Le Castillet - a crenellated fort once defended the principal gate in the city walls; The Rigaud Museum - exhibits by Catalan primitive artists including Hyacinthe Rigaud.

A number of budget airlines fly to Perpignan and Girona in Spain, from a number of regional airports in the UK. (bmibaby.com; ryanair.co.uk; flybe.com). If you like train journeys, you can take Eurostar from St. Pancras, London, to Lille. Change platforms for TGV to Salvador Dali station, Perpignan. St. Cyprien is half an hours taxi ride away or, if available, my caretaker offers a collection service for a small fee. Perpicat runs a coach service between Girona airport & Perpignan with a bus stop 5 minutes walk from the apartment.
