About our region
Lae de Haut is convenient for a trip to Spain and Jaca as the Spanish border is just 17 miles away. Lourdes is 45 miles away and 8 miles to our local town where there is a market of Friday mornings.
There is also a market at St Palais and Orthez. Our village has a market on Sunday mornings, and throughout the summer there is a Berger's supper on Thursday evenings at the village hall. This is a pleasant evening showing the work of the Bergers (Shepherd) and his dogs in the mountains and to sample a typical meal for a small fee.
We have woodland from which the deer will venture out in the early mornings and evenings.
Late August and September you are welcome to help yourself to the peaches, chestnuts, apples and pears while you are with us as the crop only lasts 2 or 3 weeks and we seem to waste most of it.
Attractions
Lae de Haut sits in the valley of Baretous, just 1 km from a very good supermarket and the village of Aramits.
Just 5 minutes in the car further up the hill is the Aventure Parc with bungee jumps, www.aventureparc.fr This is professionally run and isn't just for children; adults enjoy it too. They also have a white water sport department.
The Baretous valley has been approved by the French Cycling Federation.
There are many VTT, horseback trails and a multitude of marked trails for both beginners and experienced hikers.
Also within pedalling distance are the Cols of Arbisque, Marie Blanque and La Pierre St Martin.
For a day out there is Lourdes, 45 km; and we have scenic routes made out for this journey.
The wine routes of Jurancon are recommended, and also the cheese routes as the local cheese goes very well with the Jurancon wine.
A treat for the children, nearby is the Trout Farm and for just 3 Euros this includes rod hire and they can fish in the lake.
You can enjoy a drink at the Bar terrace whilst watching them, and have a meal or a snack here.
Skiing: there are many ski stations, with one cross country resort just 13 miles awy, and the family oriented resort of St Pierre Martin 17 miles away.
Also another great day out, Le Petit Train.
Activities in the region include hiking, rafting, kayaking, canyoning, potholing, mountain biking, cycling the Tour de France routes, skiing, fishing, horse riding and hydrotherapy.
