About our property

Le Cros (Bed & Breakfast) Le Cros was acquired by us in 1988 and has been steadily transformed from a tumbledown farmhouse into a well-appointed country house in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers vineyards. It is attached to our self catering gite, L'Etable.

There is a swimming pool on the premises, as well as an in-house wine tasting room. It is in the quiet hamlet of Sallebruneau in southwest France, only 3 km from the village of Frontenac, with its sleepy bar and the 'place' where the old men play boules.

The area remains unspoilt by tourism. It is just 5 km from the little bustling market town of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, and 40 km from the city of Bordeaux.

The Rooms

There is accommodation for up to eight guests in four comfortable bedrooms, all with their own bathrooms. Should a 'family room' configuration be needed, a further single bed can be added to one of the doubles.

The decor and facilities are sympathetic to the Girondine style of the house, yet incorporate the usual creature comforts. Guests should bring a bathing towel, but all other towels and linen are provided.

Terracotta tiled floors and thick sandstone walls mean refreshingly cool temperatures in the summer, and one must not overlook the 'vineyard room' where you can relax at the end of the day with a glass or three of a local crû!

Charles and Lucie Skipwith have created a golf enthusiasts haven buried in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards. Their home, Le Cros, is at the hub of many courses. Here are just a few :

Transport for up to seven guests (with clubs) to and from one or more of the surrounding courses can be supplied. If travelling by air, collection and delivery to or from either Bordeaux or Bergerac airports can be arranged together with your own clubs.

Coming by train, Libourne is on the main TGV route from the Lille connection to London. It is easily reached in half a day.

Guests will have comfortable and tastefully decorated rooms all with private bath/shower rooms. They can relax by the pool after a good day on the course, or sample a glass or three of one of the many local wines in the tasting room before sitting down to a delicious 4 or 5-course meal created by Lucie who owned and cooked at their Michelin, Egon Ronay, Good Food Guide accredited restaurant in Hampshire for twenty one years.

In addition, we are pleased to be able to offer the services of a fully-qualified beautician for those who want total pampering as they catch the rays on the terrace or by the pool.

With satellite reception guests can catch up on worldwide news or follow their favourite soap. Fast-link wi-fi internet connections are now available by the pool or in the house.

Should you wish to take a ramble through the vineyards, we can put one of our Citroen 2CVs at your disposal. It can be fitted with Satellite Navigation should you wish to have an itinerary set out for you, or not be bothered by checking cumbersome roadmaps.

Alternatively, we can arrange wine-orientated tours to chateaux in the nearby growing areas of St Emilion, Sauternes, Graves and the Medoc

We aim to generate an all-encompassing break for you and your friends where the accent is on convivial relaxation in the tranquil setting of our well maintained gardens and comfortable rooms.

Also, we hope that to have our own 9-tee ‘chip ‘n putt’ practice ground here at Le Cros this summer.

About our region

Beyond the entrance gate of our house there is plenty of interest to explore, from the Commandery of the Knights of St John (12th century), in our hamlet, to the vineyards of St Emilion (20 km) with its cobblestone streets and myriads of artisans' shops. We are also within easy reach of Libourne, Castillon, Langon, and of course, Bordeaux.

In the Entre-Deux-Mers, where the house stands, every corner turned presents an unrivalled view over ranks of carefully trimmed vineyards, studded with little communities clamouring round distinctive Aquitaine churches and historical buildings.

Activities in the area include horse riding and abseiling (both by prior arrangement), fishing at the nearby Lacs de Laubesc and rock climbing.

Many of the region's towns and villages have markets, and it is possible to visit a different one each day.

We are close to the great wine growing regions of St Emilion, Sauternes, Graves, Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and Médoc, and visits to local châteaux are available for those wanting to extend their knowledge of wine production, often including tastings.

Trips to Bordeaux, St Emilion (including Clos de Cordeliers cellars), the châteaux of the Médoc and Sauternes can be arranged.

A regional four-course meal with local wines can be served from €25.00

Bookings can be secured by sending a Sterling/Euro/Dollar cheque payable to Mme L M Skipwith at Le Cros, Route de Sallebruneau, 33760 Frontneac, France.

This cheque will be returned to you at the end of your stay against final settlement in euro cash currency.

We regret that payment cannot be made by credit/debit card.

All provisional reservations will be held for 21 days from the date of the intitial booking made by email/letter/telephone.

Getting There

Only 45 minutes from Bordeaux, L'Etable and Le Cros lie just off the D670 country Itinerary, on the D123 to the north of Sauveterre de Guyenne. Bordeaux Merignac Airport is conveniently close. Libourne and Bordeaux railway stations, the A10 & A61/62 motorways are all nearby.

The Channel Eurostar link from Waterloo to Lille connects with the TGV high-speed train directly to either Libourne or Bordeaux. Travel time from London can be as little as 8 hours with no stress.

For those coming by road, we have found that it is about 7-9 hours' drive from the Channel ports of St Malo, Cherbourg, Caen, Le Havre or Dieppe. Guests can arrive in time for a pre-prandial glass of wine looking over the vines with the back-drop of a dramatic sunset.
