our region Relax and discover the hidden treasures of Les Landes, south west France a region of rivers, lakes and forest and boasting the longest beach in Europe.Le Vieux Logis is situated in Le Bourg, Solferino, 6 kms. from junction 15 off the RN10/A63 motorway. Le Vieux Logis, a former coach house built in the middle of the 19th century is a traditional, stone built house and is an ideal rest stop on your journey to Spain/Portugal or to the ferry ports. The house stands in the Domaine Imperial de Solferino in the heart of the parc régional des Landes de Gascogne: 35 minutes from the golden sands of the Atlantic coast; just over an hour to central Bordeaux and Biarritz and about 45 minutes from the famous hot water springs of Dax. The History– The forest of Les Landes is entirely man-made having being planted in the 19th century as a way of taming the vast stretches of sand and swampland. In a space of 50 years the old moorland landscape with it wandering flocks of sheep watched over by the famous Landes stilt walkers had given way to a rich growth of maritime pines. The “Domaine Imperial de Solferino” was established around 1857 as part of the rehabitation and further land development instigated by Napoleon III. In order to regenerate the region 7,000 hectors of land was planted with pine trees which were able to service the growing demand for wood and its by-product resin during the expending industrial revolution. Various types of experimental farms were also introduced being cotton, tobacco potatoes and maize. Today, agriculture is mainly maize and white asparagus, the speciality of the region and of course timber. The House A large entrance hall leads to a comfortably furnished lounge with large chimney and log burning stove. And separate dining Room with a seating capacity of 12/14 people. First Floor has a landing area for sitting out leading to five good sized bedrooms all with private facilities including toilet, wash basin and shower Outside there is a secure garden area for relaxing and eating “alfresco”. The back of the house looks out over open field.

** special rate for staying 3 nights or more The weather - The micro climate ensures a very pleasant ambiance from late spring to late autumn with high temperatures during the summer months, Eating out - For gastronomic delights sample foie gras, confit de canard, magret de canard accommpanied with wines from the vineyards of Bordeaux Not to be missed are oysters and mussels from le bassin d’Arcachon eaten with a squeeze of lemon juice and washed down with chilled white wine. If you are passing through for one night or staying for 2 weeks a feast of activities and a warm welcome awaits. Local Restaurants - the local Auberge restaurants are ideal for sampling the foods of the region. May we suggest, in particular, “La Petite Ferme Imperiale”. It is owned by Alain and Isabelle who produce up to 99% of the food for their own menus. Needless to say you will be assured of a very warm welcome and we will be delighted to make the reservation on your behalf. Be warned; work up an appetite before you go. Activities – If you want a relaxing holiday or you prefer a more energetic holiday, this region is perfect for you from golfing, walking, cycling, water sports or horse riding.

du Pyla and climb the, reputedly, largest For bird lovers visit “Le Parc Ornothologique du Teich” A site of national importance for all types of sea bird. The Lake at Biscarrosse is ideal for all boating activities, sailing, powerboats, jet skiing are all readily available for rent. The sandy beach around the lake provides clean, safe swimming in its warm water: extremely safe for small children. Mimizan is a typical holiday resort with miles of golden sandy shoreline and with its high Atlantic rollers is ideal for surfing and water sports. Here you can go horse riding through the forest trails and gallop along the beach. Make a voyage of discovery to the beautiful city of Bordeaux – easy access via the excellent tramway system. Park your car and catch the tram into the city centre see the graceful architecture, excellent shopping and pavement cafés. Go south into the Basque country visit Biarritz, St Jean de Luz and travel up the mountain at La Rhune on its little train.From there, you are not far from the Spanish border and San Sebastian. Directions By car: the ferry crossing to St Malo is the more direct route and will take approx. 7/8 hours.From the Rocard (ringroad) at Bordeaux exit at junction 15 Bayonne / Arcachon A63/N10 motorway. Exit at junction 15 - Sabres/Mimizan, turn left onto the D44, signpost Sabres/Solferino, continue along this road through Solferino village (very small) into Solferino Bourg (approx. 6 kms from the motorway).Le Vieux Logis is situated on the right hand side of the road just before the crossroads. By air: Flying into Bordeaux travel distance to Solferino is approx. 50 minutes. Flying into Biarritz travel distance to Solferino is approx. 75 minutes.
