About our region

The pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela passes through Brantôme and Périgueux and is still studded with religious statues that were used to mark the way. Surrounded by a river, Brantôme is regarded as the Venice of Périgord and a must to visit and see, for its ancient Benedictine Abbey, the winding streets and lovely old houses, as well as for its many restaurants.

Périgueux Cathedral, designed by the architect of the Sacré Coeur in Paris, is a beautiful backdrop to the weekly markets and the Roman amphitheatre there is imposing and in remarkably good condition. The town is famous for its food and, as it is surrounded by farms producing foie gras, the shops are full of it. The old part of the town has many medieval houses huddled together in narrow streets.

Lascaux is an astonishing example of prehistoric art and a rare insight into our origins and there are many other nearby prehistoric caves worth visiting. Excideuil with its XI century fortress, is a charming small market town with a host of medieval buildings.

Bergerac, which lies on the Dordogne river is only 40 kms from here. The town is surrounded by vineyards which produce mainly red and rosé wines, but just to the north is Pécharmant, a small group of vineyards, which produce a distinctive and very good red wine. To the south of Bergerac are the Monbazillac vineyards, which produce a sweet white wine that goes well with foie gras and pastries.

Activities

About 12 kms from us is Lac Jemaye where you can swim, windsurf or just do some fishing. There are river beaches at St. Aulaye and Aubeterre, and canoeing on the Dronne from both villages or other drop off points. After drifting gently downstream, picnicking en route, you can be collected by mini bus. At Servanches and Pillac (10 kms) there are 9 hole golf courses.

There are tennis courts at St. Aulaye, Aubeterre and Riberac, and an excellent riding school and stables at Aubeterre at Riberac. There are also wonderful walking and cycling routes through unspoilt countryside, the very best way to explore and see the local area.

Getting there

By air

Cheap flights are available from Gatwick to Tolouse, from Southampton to Bergerac and from Stanstead to Limoges. The cost varies with season, day of the week and the time interval from the booking to the flight. It is worth booking well ahead. Midweek is considerably cheaper. You can hire a car from all of these airports.

By car

We are 430 miles from Calais. The journey takes about 7 hours plus stops. there are a variety of ways of getting to Calais, the tunnel and various ferries from Dover and Folkestone. Coming from the west country, it may be more pleasant to take a ferry from Portsmouth to Caen, or from Weymouth to Cherbourg or St. Malo. These routes take longer at sea but reduce the distance to drive.

Eurostar to Angouleme - 7 hours from Waterloo - via Paris or Lille
