  About our property

Chateau de Firbeix is a large French country house of 13th /14th century origin. It is situated in the Perigord Vert region of the Dordogne (in the “parc natural regional Perigord/Limousin”) an area of rolling hills, forests and lakes, pretty villages, spectacular chateaux and a renowned cuisine.

We offer two well-equipped and spacious holiday gites which have been carefully renovated to include today’s amenities whilst retaining the ambiance and craftsmanship of a bygone age and should appeal to anyone in search of a peaceful holiday.

Les Glycines sleeps eight and Les Tilleuls sleeps seven. Both self catering holiday apartments provide 2 folding beds and a cot and high chair. The attic rooms are not accessible from either holiday accommodation so parents need not fear that children can reach this floor.

Each holiday accommodation has its own separate floodlit terrace with outdoor tables and chairs and a barbecue for outdoor meals on a warm summer's evening. Small children are catered for with a baby swing, sandpits, a picnic table and a small slide. There are some bikes and an inflatable paddling pool suitable for little children. Further away from the house, in the wooded area of the garden can be found a set of swings. Another set of swings is situated near the heated swimming pool. A games room, new in 2005, is situated behind the main building, in a converted barn, it contains table tennis and various other games and occupations for children as well as a multigym for energetic parents.

The house is surrounded by a large, well-cared for garden, consisting of large grassy areas, some flower beds and some unusual trees. There are benches and seats around for you to find a quiet place to read or relax in the sunshine or shade. Petanque can be played anywhere in the garden. There is also a badminton set, a football net and a selection of chidren's bicycles. Several adult bicycles are also available for which there is no charge.

The heated swimming pool measures 11.5 x 5 metres and is the salination type (no sore eyes). It has a large poolside terrace, poolside loungers and parasols, underwater lighting as well as poolside lights. It is securely fenced for child safety, has a safety ledge all round, and the gates are heavily sprung. There are 3 wide steps all the way across the shallow end which are used a lot by small children., the first one being in about 20 cms of water. The pool is heated from mid May to mid September.

A short walk from the property, along a quiet lane, is a large and well stocked fishing lake. All our visitors may fish here. It adjoins the footpath taken by St Jacques de Compostelle on one of his pilgrimages.

Accommodation

Les Glycines

Within the immense stone walls of this historic property, the interior of Les Glycines has been painstakingly restored in the Perigordian style to reveal its character and ambience whilst incorporating all modern amenities.

Leading off the kitchen is a large lounge with an imposing fireplace with a woodburning stove, satellite TV, DVD player, 2 leather sofas and a table and chairs for the board games which we have provided.

The kitchen is at the heart of this gite. It is large and well equipped with a heavily beamed ceiling. It contains a fridge, freezer, built in fan oven, 5 burner gas hob with fish kettle, microwave and a generous supply of cooking equipment and tableware.

Also leading off the kitchen, but on the other side is the dining room with a large table to accommodate 8 people comfortably.

A door from the lounge leads to the conservatory, which has a Spanish tiled floor, sofa, armchairs and some cane furniture

There is a utility room with a washing machine, a second larger fridge, a dishwasher, a double French farmhouse sink, iron, ironing board etc.

Access to the rear of the property is from this room and also to the separate toilet

It has a large table which can be extended to seat up to 12, and a barbeque, perfect for al fresco dining, and made private from Les Tilleuls by the jasmine and honeysuckle screen.

Les Tilleuls

Les Tilleuls is situated at the end of the south wing of Chateau de Firbeix

A lot of thought has gone into making this apartment very suitable for small children. The standard of workmanship and fittings are of the same high standard as in Les Glycines but the property is slightly smaller and the style less rustic.

The kitchen has a stainless steel sink unit, dishwasher, microwave cooker, large fridge and fitted cupboards and shelves. The 5 burner gas range cooker has a safety rail over the hob to ensure that pans cannot be pulled over. There is a long table with seating for eight people in comfort.

The lounge area has comfortable seating with TV and video. There is a fully fitted downstairs bathroom and a small utility area with freezer, washing machine, iron, ironing board, etc.

The property has three bedrooms. 1 double and 1 triple, both being spacious and airy with large windows looking out over the front garden. The third bedroom has a full size set of bunk beds. The larger window in this bedroom has a lock on it and the smaller one retains its original iron bars making it suitable for children. There is ample room for the 2 folding beds if required. There is also a conveniently situated upstairs shower room with hand basin and toilet.

The floors are all of polished chestnut, oak or tile, and again there is a safety gate at the top of the stairs. The décor has been carefully chosen to enhance the architectural style of this part of the house, which is less rustic than Les Glycines, whilst incorporating modern day amenities.

French doors open out onto a small breakfast terrace at the rear of the property.

Heating is by gas central heating and all gas and electricity are included in the price. Bedlinen is provided and changed weekly and towels are provided (11 bath towels, 7 hand towels but no pool towels).

As well as the small breakfast terrace at the rear of the property there is a patio at the front, extending under the trees and facing the pool and children's play area. This area has floodlighting, a barbeque, table and chairs and is seperated and made private from the terrace of Les Glycines by a jasmine and honeysuckle screen.

About our region

Of the numerous towns worthy of a visit, Perigueux town centre should not be missed. With its narrow streets and sunny squares it looks and feels typically French.

Brantome is famous for its abbey and is known as the "Venice du Perigord" with its riverside cafes and restaurants. Two arms of the river Dronne, over which are several stone bridges, enfold the little town. The red roofed buildings and riverside gardens add to its charm.

Villages such as St Jean de Cole need to be discovered on foot, their beauty being hidden from the road and easily missed. There are several restaurants in this village, all of which are interesting, and a rather grand Chateau.

The Chateau at Jumilhac occupies a commanding position overlooking the square of this small town. It has been used in many films. It is nice to go here on a Sunday morning when the local people gather to sell local produce on the market and bric-a--brac. Then you can retire on to the terrace of the café for an aperitif or a cup of coffee and watch the world go by! Other chateaux are open to visitors and many hold exhibitions in the season.

Between Thiviers and Brantome are the Grottes de Villars---miles of underground passageways and home to ancient civilisations.

Becoming increasingly popular during the summer vacations, vide grenieres or brocantes provide an excellent opportunity to find interesting souvenirs at bargain prices, if you are lucky enough to chance upon one. Village fetes can be well worth a visit; the fete at St. Pierre de Frugie (end of July) in particular should not be missed

For days out you may wish to visit Bergerac or sample the wines from the area. Sarlat, too, is impressive, and popular with summer visitors. You could even do battle with the traffic in Bordeaux.
