  About our property

Les Hirondelles provides a truly picturesque and peaceful location for people who want to get away from it all and, at the same time, be within easy driving distance of all the amenities and attractions of the beautiful Dordogne and Vézère valleys.

Set amongst forested rolling hills, Les Hirondelles is part of a sleepy little hamlet called Montribot, around 4kms from Rouffignac St Cernin, our nearest town. Rouffignac itself has a bank, post office, chemist, bars/cafés, restaurant and an excellent small supermarket. There are also two bakeries one of which, Blondy’s, makes the most delicious cakes and pastries for many miles around (you have been warned!). The small colourful Sunday market in Rouffignac is not to be missed …. it provides really fresh locally produced fruit and vegetables, as well as cheese, wine, honey and forest mushrooms.

Nestling on a hilltop, our house and the cottages are tucked away towards the end of a narrow lane ensuring their peace and tranquility. The cottages sit apart from each other facing in opposite directions. Situated at almost 1000ft, from wherever you are in the grounds you can delight in the superb views of the surrounding countryside. You are welcome to stroll in the 7 acres of grounds part of which is mixed woodland and walnut grove. Peaches, figs, cherries and grapes are some of the fruits grown around the grounds. When available they are offered to our guests.

Swimming Pool

The 10 x 5m saltwater swimming pool has roman steps and underwater lighting, and nestles into the hillside. It is surrounded by an attractive sunbathing terrace with sun loungers and parasols and enjoys magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The pool is shared by both the cottages.

About our region

For many people the area’s biggest attraction is the gastronomy. There are many fine Auberges and restaurants each offering slightly different but sumptuous local menus. Many menus are based around the products of locally reared duck, geese and sanglier (wild boar).

The surrounding area teems with wildlife, including red squirrel, pine marten, wild boar and deer …. we have catalogued 63 types of bird in the vicinity of the house alone. The wild flowers, and in particular the orchids, are stunning in spring and early summer. It is a small paradise for those interested in all aspects of nature, and you can walk directly into lovely flower meadows and woodland. In fact, you can enjoy many interesting and varied walks in the immediate area.

The Bergerac area, 40 minutes away, offers you many vineyards for wine tastings, and buying these good-value wines. For people who wish to travel a little further, less than 2 hours away, the Bordeaux and St Emilion areas offer tastings of their renowned wines.

There is so much to see and do in this lovely area – there are numerous chateaux, castles and bastide towns, some built by the English during the 100 years war.

The region is renowned as one of the earliest sites of prehistoric civilisation. There are many caves, troglodyte villages and exhibitions to visit.

There are innumerable hidden, dreamy little flower-filled villages to explore, each tucked away deep in the rolling countryside.

Activities

Golf - There is a newly opened golf course with practice range just 15 minutes away. Visit www.marterie.fr for more details. There is also a good municipal course in Perigueux.
