The Region

Ariège is one of the most unspoiled and least populated regions in France, where the local people keep to a traditional way of life, surrounded by the peaks of the Pyrenees mountains.

Numerous species of butterflies and orchids thrive here, and the area is rich in caves which once sheltered prehistoric man.

Numerous mountains streams, rivers and lakes offer trout fishing, kayaking and climbing. There are marked walking trails leading to 3000 metre peaks where marmots, chamois and even bears are reputed to roam.

Mountain bikers can tour the valleys and villages, and even a stage of the Tour de France.

St Girons

The nearest town is St Girons, which provides all amenities. Pink marble pavements adorn the centre of town, and a range of traditional old fashioned shops are situated across the bridge.

The riverside Champs de Mars is a wide area bordered by plane trees, where a large market is held on the first and fourth Monday of the month. A weekly Saturday morning market offers fresh local produce.

Foix

Foix is a larger market town, dating from medieval days with half timbered houses and and the impressive château de Foix which dominates the town and offers splendid views. Museums inlcude the Musée de la Prehistoire, Grotte du Mas d'Azil for archaology and Les Forges du Pyrenean, an open air museum with ironworks and sawmill.

Tours for canyoning, hiking and mountain biking can be found at the company Pyrenevasion in Foix.

Andorra

The tiny principality of Andorra, one of the oldest nations in Europe, is a very popular destination with over 10 million visitors each year. Nestled between the peaks, it offers duty free shopping, mild temperatures during the summer months and some of the best skiing in the Pyrenees.
